just found out the 51814 battery won't fit my bike [2001 1150gs ]
because it doesn't have abs or heated grips!
can I fit a different battery carrier?
or how do I find a decent battery that will fit
tried checking the forum no luck so far

cheers

When you say it won't fit, do you mean it is physically too big, or that it isn't the recommended replacement?:nenau

AFAIK, the battery carriers are all the same.......it would have been daft and expensive for BMW to make different sized boxes for different models.

hi Bill
it won't physically fit
its the recommended replacement, but it appears that as my bike had no abs or heated grips the battery was smaller?
so I saw a listing for a yuasa that was different taking this into account!
the present battery is knacked,at work so have forgotten the make but it was one I had never heard of
motobins sort of allude to a difference

Daft & expensive or not - that's what they did...

Return it? If it was listed as the right fitment for your model, then it's not fit for the purpose it was bought for and can legitimately be returned/exchanged.

thanks everyone for your help
battery tray ordered
you know that saying 'never assume........'
seems worth staying with the larger battery for the next change!
all another reason to pay your subs

Order four of the rubber mounts whilst you're at it - you'll almost certainly shear off one or two anyway (Part no is 61212305050, but Motorworks do a much cheaper alternative - FRA33028). Also, take a good look at the wiring loom under the rear left of the battery cage - the rubber mounts let the cage move slightly and it can wear through the insulation and cause a short. Repair any damaged insulation, then put something in between to absorb the damage (I used a piece of flexible plastic chopping board).

They have a lower output alternator too... :comfort

That's perhaps easier to understand on a cost basis, but I'm surprised that it was worthwhile tooling up for two custom made carriers with what must be a minimal difference in cost between a lower amp hour battery and the OEM 21AH one :nenau

The non abs bikes had a spacer ( like a open ended box an inch or so deep) fitted in the base of the battery box which can be unbolted to allow the bigger battery to be fitted .... or at least my 2000 r1150gs did until I removed it to fit an Odyssey battery

Had the same problem with my 2004 GSA when replacing the Oem battery, although this is fitted with ABS and heated grips. Motobatt wouldn't fit so got a refund, but Odyssey did.

I just replaced Odyssey in my 1150 - with an Odyssey which although dearer, stopped any worry about fit. I put a motobatt in the r100GS and it is a beaut.

Thanks for this post.
My battery is getting tired and I will be replacing very soon.
But won't till I measure the space for it.

Adrian
I've got a dead Motobatt in the garage that came out of my 1150. You're welcome to borrow it to check if it fits. Or even keep it, of you want a bright yellow doorstop.

Thanks for the offer but the distance between Dunedin and Eastbourne isnt worth the shipping costs.
I should be able to get dimensions to measure up.
