Motorcycle Helmet Legislation

Hi All
I moved, from the UK, to Sydney and brought my helmet with me but now I feel it is time for a new one!
I am interested in buying a Arai motorcycle helmet from the US but have a few questions:
Do all helmets in Australia have to comply with the Australian Standard?
Do all helmets have to have the Australian Standards sticker on it?
If the helmet does not have the Australian Standards sticker on it is it "recognised" by insurance companies?

Any help would be appreciated

Found this - hope it helps ??

By law in most (all?) states in Australia you are required to wear a
helmet that complies to Australian Standard 1698. If the helmet has a
visor (as all full-face helmets should), the visor must comply with
Australian Standard 1609. Both helmet and visor must display the
Australian Standards sticker or be embossed with the AS logo.

The law apparently takes the view that if you are booked wearing a
helmet without AS certification, then you are not wearing a helmet at
all, and will be fined accordingly. This includes helmets bought
overseas and imported personally, even if they are the same model as
can be bought off the shelf here.

Isn't that pretty much what our country says? Never seems to matter here.
My other half has been using an american import shoei for some years with no problems at all. At one time they were the only xxs shoeis that you could get any patterns on.
I've also been trying to import a new one for myself in a pattern thats not available here.
If shagley has been using his old one for a while it sounds like things are pretty similar down under. It would take a pretty observant officer to notice its not an oz one, unless they have to have a specific highly visiable sticker of some sort like the french compulsary hi-viz stickers.

Called into my local dealership and asked the very same question and they said that there was no law as such . They hinted that a motorcycle cop may use it as a way of "pining" something on you. They suggested I speak to my insurance company as they would be the main problem if something happened and I was not wearing an Australian Standard helmet - its a get out clause so to speak!!

I brought both our UK BS std arai helmets and used them with no problems.

We even had a bike accident and the insurance assessor checked it out, grumbled a bit but didn't do anything about it.

Australian Standard 1698

To put it briefly,
If your lid does NOT have a AS 1698 sticker, you are deemed NOT to be wearing a helmet - on the spot fine for you !
This applies in NSW, and probably in the rest of the country.
