Motorway ‘blipper’ / smart tags - For ALL news, advice, how to get one and what’s best, irrespective of the country

I screenshot this from Fulli for someone else last night, then thought it might be helpful here.
Zero up front costs, even for UK delivery. You just need a bank account that accepts SEPA direct debits - I use a Wise account that I set up using their app and a small balance, and just add funds to cover the invoice Fulli send me at the end of any month I’ve used it.

In France at the moment and there are several motorway sections now around the Caen area with there tool booths removed..
Sanef signage says payment required within 72 hrs...

My Fulli tag still beeped at me as I went past the overhead Gantrys....

Yes, they’re the new “flux libre” sections, I went through some a couple of weeks ago around Honfleur and Le Havre, tag beeped and they all got paid no problem

Same when we went up to Spa via Calais a month ago.

What happens if you don’t have a tag, though? I didn’t see any signs or details on how to pay.

That reassuring ‘beep’ and barrier raising :DD
Just got my bill for last month’s jolly in France £27

In classic French fashion you'll have to figure that out for yourself and get shouted at if you get it wrong. :D

I've driven back from Italy a couple of weeks ago, I missed all these new toolbooths :(
I'm curious now.

I believe you can pay in a motorway service area but I don't know if it's just certain ones or all

Or I think you can pay on line

As er-minio says, the French have a talent for making simple things complicated in the name of improvement

So slightly different question - since it’s not at all obvious these are toll roads, what happens if an unsuspecting Brit with no knowledge of toll tags just happily drives through unaware?

I recall when Portugal introduced toll roads by stealth a few years ago, I had no clue and happily continued driving them without ever being aware I should have paid a toll.

A. They (the barrier free payage sections) are not being introduced by stealth. There is bloody great signs up about them. Yes, the signs are in French, as that is their native language.

B. Just buy a blipper tag and leave the worrying at home.

C. Brits who do not pay are paraded through the streets of Paris on Bastille Day and then guillotined. I read it on the internet or my mate told me. He knows stuff.

D. No self respecting Brit bikermate will ever use a motorway as:

1. They is well boring.

2. They is like a rip off, so feck ‘em.

:beerjug:

PS As ever, the answer is out there:

Later this month I’ll be travelling down the A26/E15 from Calais to Troyes. Am I correct in thinking this will be the old system with ‘normal’ toll booths ?

It was - for me - 2 weeks ago.

I hope they added a (few) signs with the website address where to pay along the road, after going after the new gantries (in Portugal it wasn't that clear).
Anyway, to pay without an account, here: https://www.sanef.com/client/index.html?lang=en#basket
Where we passed the non toll booths, there were banners on the overhead road bridges and on some signage at the roadside..
Telling you to go too Sanef.com for payment within 72 hrs...

I checked my reg and all was in green,so the Fulli tag was doing its job

Just buy a tag and it won’t matter, one way or another.

PS It’ll very probably be the old style barriers.

Just home from our 2 week France/Corsica/Italy/Germany jaunt. The Tollbird tag worked perfectly. Thanks for all the advice.

Once they have established a way of paying the charges *, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been very happy with their blipper, irrespective of the vehicle they have been using.

* A few bods found it tricky to link their payment method to their blipper.

I have a Fullli tag, First year of use , hit and miss, some booths saw the tag, some didn't , overcharged for one section, but all came out in the wash , as they say

2nd year, no issues whatsoever, all booths registered the bike, and all tolls paid

interestingly, there is/ was meant to be a service charge applied after xx months for the non use months

it doesn't appear to be billed , or taken from my account

I'll find out in 4 weeks time :D

Possibly depends on the deal offered at the time? Our Fulli tag was free of service charges for 12 months and now only charges 1.90€ for each month we use it. No service charge for unused months (not sure if unused for 12 months but the chance of this happening is minimal 😁).
