Motorworks exchange gearboxes?

I use SKF bearings from: http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/index.php and usually replace the roller bearing on the input shaft - though occasionally I'll just replace the inner sleeve, which is available from Matt Beekers at: http://bmwboxersupplies.com/.

I'll cut a circlip groove in the output shaft if the box doesn't have one - it costs me nothing to do and the circlip is a couple of pence. It could extend the life of the box though.

I take about eight depth readings for each bearing housing in the rear cover and then shim to the tightest with a clearance of 0.05mm. The box is usually running free when warm, but can be tight when cold. I then make a decision - is it too tight ??

If I think it is I'll start again and drop the shimming by a couple of thou'. The aim being to have it turnable by hand when cold but free when warm. The difference in shimming between tight and free is minuscule.

Nowadays I'll put oil in the box and run it in my lathe for a while - making sure that it goes up and down the gears properly. The oil is drained (and checked) before the box is posted back.

Right now I'm rebuilding a Transfer Box from a Toyota Land Cruiser 'Colorado' for a guy in the Isle of Man (he could be a useful contact :augie). It is full of rust and is taking me an inordinate amount of time to sort out. These jobs are fine as long as no-one is in a hurry as I have plenty of my own work to do ;).

Bob.

Do you do 1150 Oilhead gearboxes too?

O.M.G. What have I started .

I rebuilt an oilhead box from Scotboxer's 1100 RT a year or so ago (shortly before it was stolen), and I have an 1150 box in bits that Robmack destroyed (he made a good job of it - broken castings and everything :blast). So I have some experience of them. I keep thinking that I should rebuild the box from my 1150 GSA as its had a bit of a hard time in some very hot countries, but its not been a priority.

I won't claim to be an expert on the oilhead boxes and would be feeling my way which is not good with someone else's kit.

I'm reluctant to take one on . . . unless you are absolutely stuck and not in a hurry for it.

Remember that box I was doing Bob,

Stripped it down, even got around to buying new bearings, and it's been sat ever since,

Building up my Guzzi, took a long time, mans now I have to completely strip my Honda 400/4 engine, every time I think I will get to it, something comes up.

Thanks Bob

Good to know, for future reference should it be required

It's a real shame that Steve Scrimmager has dropped out of the BMW engineering resource scene - he really was a wizard

Ha Ha! I am in the process of lifting the body off my Toyota Landcruiser 'Colorado' so that I can replace the two 6ft sill/floor panels. I am also taking down an 80ft dead Beech tree - while keeping the other three cars, Transit Van and three bikes on the road.

My spare Airhead Gearbox needs a new rear cover - which I bought last year - one day I will get to it :D.

Air cooled gearbox refurb
Gearbox arrives and is stripped, casings are cleaned and checked for damage,
Internals are given a degrease and cleaned ,then given the once over.
Casings sent for blast cleaning,on return casings are cleaned with high pressure steam then hand cleaned and further inspected for damage and blast media,
If all is good it looks like this:thumb

All individual parts are checked, any damaged or worn bits are binned
In the case of motorworks,if parts are needed, they are an email away,
Mostly they just send a donor box with damaged casings, they have a few bits knocking about:D
