Motul 7100 4T 5W-40 ordered... but standard or K&N filter

About a year too late :yelrotflm

only had the Motul in for 3K miles as I got a very strong knock from the gearbox... went back to std oil and it made it better, but the damage was done... was it the Motul??

I'll never use it again!!

Does your bike's engine and gearbox share the same oil?

In most older beemers they are separate.

Yes. It would have to be a very old bike to have a separate gearbox.
This is why motorcycles need more frequent oil changes, the gearbox put an entirely different set of wear properties on the oil than that of a car where the oil lubricates the engine only.
The gearbox acts like a blender and chops up the long chain molocules of the oil, this shortens it's effective life and it is why you should use M/C specific oils as they have been designed for the job, car oils have not.

Look in your owners handbook.
Find SAE and API and any motorcycle oil that meets that spec is quite adequate.
SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2

Hi-flo filters are TUV approved so must meet or exceed OEM standard.
Manufacturers cannot by law specify a brand of oil although they all do.

Just looked it up, you learn something new everyday! Up to the LC the Boxer engine used separated lubrication for engine/gearbox.

Yep another penny pinching method to get the bikes in every year for an oil change, or less for those that ride over 5K miles a year

I agree on the gearbox.. it really did make short work of the Motul although is was better than the required spec.... I'll be sticking to Shell om this one ;)

Yup, i used to buy a litre of Syntrax oil for the bevel drive 200ml, then change the gearbox oil 800 ml, so it worked out fine. My GSA gearbox was as slick as with regular oil changes.
