Mounting Panniers

I was lucky to win a pair of Touratech Zega Pro panniers at the Hograost, they were supplied without any fittings, I have managed to scrounge a set of frames to fit my R100GS and I've bought two sets of fittings from Touratech

Before I start drilling holes has anybody else done this job before? The instructions are all in German, is it as simple as just aligning the frame central to the pannier and start drilling? How high do you mount panniers on the bike how far forward or back? Seems the more I think of it the more fiddly it gets

Not at all helped by never having seen how TT panniers mount? Seems alot of bits and bobs compared to the MM's simple QD system that i'm more used to!

Fit the rails to the bike as per above instructions.

Then offer up r/h case to right rack (right when viewed from rear of bike facing number plate). The right side is more critical because of proximity to rear indicator which isn't a problem on the left due to off-set pannier.

Mark the pannier in the centre top of top rail, centre bottom of bottom rail and centre outer on front and rear rails.

Now you can use the supplied template to position pucks etc.

Once the right hand is sorted, spirit level across from top of r/h pannier, offer up left hand pannier and repeat as above.

I found I wanted the tops of the boxes to line up with my rear rack so I could throw a big Ortlieb rack pack across the panniers and rack and equal the load across them.

Cheers, there is no 'supplied template' or at least there is no full size one, just a tech/dim drawing of the pucks. I was kind of expecting a paper template with the kits

TBH i think with your instructions i'm gonna try and wing it with what i've got, i'm not really looking forward to dealing with TTUK again

There's a bloody good reason why I know this having watched my brand new pannier get drilled twice as the tw@t who fitted them did not follow this advice

Dont know if this helps but when fitting hard panniers to my bike and my brother in law, we used two pieces of box section steel, and ratchet straps.

Place the steel across the frame of the bike and then use the ratchet straps to hold the panniers in place on the steel. We then manoeuvred the boxes into the position where we wanted them and used double sided sticky tape to tape the pucks into position, and to be sure used a marker pen to draw around the position of the pucks. Simple job to then take the panniers off and drill the holes. It worked a treat.
We did one side at a time and made sure that the second matched up with the first.

That sounds very sensible.......I've mounted panniers without thinking it through properly once and although they were fine for me, they were too high for a pillion so I ended up re-drilling as well

If you're gonna rig up a mock-mounting position thingy Shep, don't forget to sit the lovely Jeanette on the bike (she's a lady, wowowohh!) to check the two-up mounting position as well

Right i'm fiddling my way through as we speak, i've just fitted the second hand pannier frames the RH one just dropped into place, 10mins, but the LH one has taken 2 hrs, the front mount fouled the exhaust badly but a few bends and twists made it fit OK (sort of)

The mounting faces of the frames are now out of square a little, 5-7mm viewed from behind, i'm hoping this won't show too much in the end.

One question that has popped up, does the LH rear footpeg just bolt into the pannier frame or should I try and extend the bolt to go through the pannier frame and the silencer bracket?? (they dont allign properly at the moment)

As in it needs a spacer between the exhaust and TT rails? I had to mess about when I had a Keihan exhaust and TT rails, spacers and reshaping the exhaust to clear / fit Laser pipe and TT rails fitted straight on

yes exactly that, a spacer 3" ish would be needed, ah well i'll take a look at it later, i think mine is a keihan not sure

I'll see if I've still got the bodge bits when I get home, From memory it involved a longer bolt, nut to lock the pillion footpeg to the TT rack, another nut then against the Keihan silencer, a shaped spacer on the wheel side of the Keihan silenecers bracket and then a lock nut. Two other nuts spaced the TT rail from the silencer to stop it rattling. Also needed to "adjust" the silencers hole so it all lined up.

Rear view please, the last pair I fitted (holan rails I think) needed spacing off the rear end to make the whole lot symmetrical. they look good
