If I download a movie from the internet which format (avi, mp4 etc)is best to use to burn to DVD to play on a Bose system?

AVI otherwise generally known as Divx would be your best bet.
Although, unless your DVD player has Divx playback abilities, it won't work. You would need to convert whatever you downloaded into DVD format
