My old PC (on windows XP) is very tired nowadays & prone to just freezing so I bought a new laptop, however the new lappie (Windows 7) doesnt come with Outlook Express (which I like using).

Ive tried simply dragging OE onto my external HD and linking it up to my lappie but it still doesnt recognize it.

Any idea how can i transfer it to my laptop? (or do I have to buy new software?)

Cheers

I'm no IT techie but I used outlook on my old PC but then I decided to sync my email accounts (personal and work) onto gmail and this now works a treat!
I can also sync all my contacts via my iphone too.

Someone who is vastly more knowledgeable than me will come along soon and say that waht I just said above is total crap and his way works better...:D

Have done this many times for clients..... unfortunately OE does not have a backup or export facility you can use... unless you try finding something online.

The only decent way we found that was a sure workaround was to install MS Outlook on the machine - then import all your messages and address book from OE into Outlook. Backup from Outlook to a PST file.
Copy PST file to new PC...... import into Outlook on new PC.....

long-way-round.... but works at least!

if you use gmail in IMAP mode and it should just work on any computer (and any number of computers).

it should be just a case of entering your login details into OE, but i'm guessing a bit as i don't use windows anymore. simple job in Mac Mail.

it certainly was possible to export accounts from Outlook Express, but is not Windows Live or something these days?

Whats wrong with using Windows Live Mail which is the modern equivalent of Outlook and integrates with Windows 7. It is not bundled with Windows 7 as I think they were trying to head off another court case like the one that forced them to give customers a choice of Internet Browser but is a free download from here -

Ok , it comes with a lot of crap that you will probably never use and I already had a Windows / Xbox Live account for gaming ( Its the same account ) but it might be easyer than trying to get Outlook to work on Windows 7 especially if you are using the 64 Bit version.
I can also recommend Gmail as I have a seperate online account for logging on to " art " sites.

Thanks for your responses folks :thumb

Just heading off to work, but will have a play tonight.

http://www.oehelp.com/ has some tips & utilities

The back-up utility by Majik works well and I've used it to transfer stuff from one PC to another.

However, in the current world of multiple devices on multiple platforms, some behind a workplace firewall, I've gone the gmail route. All of my legacy email addresses from previous ISPs etc are now aggregated via the gmail system.

Just done this.

Use File Export on Outlook Express and create a file.

Use Windows Live mail with Windows 7 (good program) amd use Import.

If you use Outlook, you need to export from Outlook to a pst file.
Import pst file to Outlook Express.
Then export to file as above.

There is no direct way from Outlook to Windows Live Mail.
