Could someone please answer this question which could be interesting for beginers, such as myself.

I am playing with the mapsource program whilst waiting for the delivery of my GPS.

So far I've made about five different files for five different routes which I plan to try it on. But I'm begining to think that the best thing to do is mark all the waypoints that I might need in the future into one file and then create all the different routes in to the same file. Lets say around 100 waypoints and 50 routes. Then saving the file without the maps.

Then before wishing to ride one of the routes I save the necesary maps onto the file and upload it to the GPS.

Is this the right way of doing it or should I keep making my individual files.

Ta very much the GPS is the 60C with 56 meg of memory allowing 1000 waypoints and 50 reversible routes to be saved. Plus of course the necessary maps.

Whether its right or wrong thats the way I do it. Loads of small routes allow you to change plans while still maintaining the original direction.

Some of that is just personal preference. Here are a few thoughts. When all the routes and Waypoints are in one file, the screen becomes very cluttered up and its not that easy to distinguish a single route on it even though the selected route is highlighted in yellow. Existing routes also keep you from seeing the road numbers on that route therefore making it difficult at times to build new adjoining routes. On the other hand it makes downloading much easier. That's my opinion.

Here's my main point. You can bring up more than one Mapsource and copy and paste from one to the other. For example assume you have waypoints and routes built on separate files, call them A and B and now want to combine them into a new file called C. Here is how. Bring up Mapsource and fetch file A in. Bring up another Mapsource. Now go back to the Mapsource with file A. Choose Routes on the left side window. Click on route A and do a copy (Edit-Copy). Go back to the empty Mapsource. Choose Routes on the left side window, and do an paste (Edit-Paste). Now open the Mapsource that had file A with file B. Repeat the process with B to combine the routes A and B. You can do the same for waypoints. Copy also works for multiple items, not just one at a time.

I like to split my journeys up into twice daily segments. ie a morning and afternoon route. I might end up with 20 routes for a 10 day journey but it tells me when its time to get some lunch and when to find a hotel.

Bloody hell Dave. Do you really need a machine to tell you when to eat and sleep? That's what the wife is for!
