Hi all

Just back from a week in the Alps, running in small back roads and fire tracks, using MRA to navigate. On the last day we were up around Les Arcs, and the MRA guidance went out the window.

It was showing me making progress Ali g a nice blue line that had absolutely no connection to reality - basically it thought I was somewhere else entirely.

The Garmin Montana was working ok, and Google maps on my phone was too.

Any thoughts as to what might be happening?

Do you run the application online or offline? If running affline did you have all the maps required downloaded?

It was flipping automatically between on and off line - yes I had all maps loaded.

And to the eye it looked like it was working perfectly- except what it was showing in the screen bore no correlation with where I actually was!

Odd. Was it a route calculated on MRA or imported? Did you try running Google maps or another nav app on the DMD device?

I’d put the route together using the new DMD2 route hub - which is great by the way!

I then exported it to MRA and dropped it o to the MRA route planner - then uploaded it from there.

I did the same with previous days routes, all were fine.

I think it might be something to do with GPS signal interference and how the MRA handles that.

I wonder if it was to do with the GPX, or just the device itself not accurately picking up its position.

It was v weird - and a bit troubling as I’m relying on this setup for our Albania/Montenegro trip.

Why not use the DMD2 nav? I have been using it, albeit not really in anger yet, and it seems very good. I've never found MRA to be very good at anything that doesn't involve a paved road

Might be something to do with the DMD route being created on OSM maps and the MRA app routing using Here maps?? Often the actual position of the road varies by a good bit between mapsets. Usually its <10m but there is a bit of road in the Galloway hills and the discrepancy is about 50m. If you are using MRA to navigate try using its route planner using here maps as this is what it navigates with.

Yep exactly this - I’ll make the switch. The main reason I hadn’t is because I’ve not had time to learn how the nav part works - and with three very impatient people following, that was not the right time to start!

The 690 was brilliant btw.

As an experiment I made up a in DMD and navigated it yesterday. It was only 85 miles but on lots of back roads with lots of junctions. It worked flawlessly. I need to run a couple of tests going off route but it looks like skipping a waypoint would require you to stop pull up the list and delete the one you don't want to route to use rather than skipping a route point from the navigation map as you can with MRA/Garmin.....but I'm only using the free version on an old phone?? Only drawback I've found so far and it was only for a road route.

Good to hear, and encouraging. The DMD2 route planner is excellent. It allows you to set different preferences and Road categories, including off road. Obvs there’s a need to check legality, but that aside it found roads I wouldn’t have otherwise.

I haven’t tried that yet but this may provide some answers:

I like it a lot. I've just looked at the DMD Facebook pages about skipping waypoints and apparently you don't have to you can just ignore them and unlike Garmin/MRA it won't nag you to go back.

I like the ability to use “sections” too- so part of the route can be paved and part unpaved
