Hi Folks,
Although i like to feel a bit of wind in my face, the standard screen on my 1150gsa really buffets my head and is annoy ing after 50 mls or so.
I would appreciate comments and opinions from folks with replacement screens, especially MRA Vario.
I am 5' 10" and have a lowered seat.

Cheers Steve

P.S. My Missus is on the back most of the time.

Excellent choice the MRA. not so sure about the Tobinators too... always thought they were developed to reduce buffeting on the original screen. but hey ho.

Try out the screen and you'll be bound to find it a huge improvement... I certainly did... if you feel it needs further tweaking then consider the tobinators. though frankly - I dont see the point.

hint: best price is from Jaws on this site. last I heard he was selling the screen including post for less than the price of the screen alone from the usual vendors.

1150GSA, Sergent seat, 6' 3".

Original screen = buffeting
Original screen + tobinators = no buffeting
MRA screen = no buffeting (and it looks better)

MRA

Great screen,i got mine also from JAWS here, good deal. Its an excellent screen you can dial out the buffeting, but be aware if its like mine a GSA you will need to buy the screen pods for a standard gs.I got mine from motorworks real helpfull.:Motomartin

Found an improvement from the standard to Vario on my GS. Guessing it is because of the split screen and the extra gap for the air flow to go through. I use it with Tobinators as well only 'cos I bought them before getting the screen and don't want to waste them. However, I think my problem is that I need a wider screen as I get hit from the sides.

Maybe a big wide screen with a wiper on it, all round weather protection and a good saftey shell will do :augie

6'3", standard GS1150. I tried the standard screen with Tobinators and didn't rate it, still being buffeted and limited to a comfortable 80mph. Moved to the MRA without Tobinators:thumb.
Smooths the airflow, looks good and allows comfortable cruising at 100mph

6ft, Sargent seat, standard 1150.

For me, the MRA screen is the best I've tried. :thumb2 Had a Wunderlich taller/wider screen before.

Obviously still get wind noise (always wear ear plugs), although a lot less than the Wunderlich or standard screens but no buffeting.:D

I was lucky. I bought a mint example secondhand for a price I could easily recoup if I didn't get on with the sreen :augie. That was about 5 years ago!

I've just (as in 5 minutes ago) ordered myself a vario from Jaws for my 1100 - hope they're as good as everyone says :D

I'm 6' 5" and 1150GS. Very good screen with lots of adjustability. You need to try different settings to get it just right. Most people end up with it inclined further back than you would think. The only negative, which I was told about before I fitted mine, is that it wobbles about a little. I think its because its quite heavy, but once you get used to it you dont really notice.:)

no - they're better.

circumspect as always. :augie

One thing to be aware of is that the fixings are a bit strange and some people have found them confusing... mainly due to the use of collapsible rubber 'top hats' heres a picture showing how the fixings should look. worth bearing in mind for when they arrive.

I actually found the thread above when researching the Vario screens - I'll make sure to get my top hats right ;)

Thanks Folks,
Looks like a big :thumb2 for the MRA vario.

Anyone had comments from pillion's when useing the vario?

Steve

Well my screen arrived this morning and it's now fitted.

Not been for a ride yet but it looks great and is nicely designed - money well spent I think :thumb2

Good service from Jaws too.

How about a Ztechnik

Iv'e Just got a Ztechnik screen that I've yet to fit and it looks really good . I'ts wider and taller than the stock adventure screen and has a light tint. Shape wise it is flaired on the sides and top and the quality is impressive. All that though will count for nixeys if it doesn't work. Fingers crossed!

You're right :thumb2

Went for a spin today (along with everyone else in the world who had a bike) and I'm very impressed with the - big difference over the standard screen.

When I first bought the 1150GS I had the standard screen which I then fitted with Tobinators. This cut down the buffeting considerably.
Later, having spare cash, I decided to try the MRA Vario without Tobinators which was almost as good as the standard + Tobins. This is the way the bike has been for more than two years. The reason I didn't use the Tobinators on the MRA screen is that it is a little on the flimsy side and would tend to flex from side to side given the extra height with them.
A couple of weeks ago, post birthday, I decided to treat myself to a standard GSA screen + Tobinators. This is the best turbulence-free ride I have had to date. The Tobinators stop the helmet height turbulence and the extra width of the GSA screen takes away some of the chest-level blast.
For what its worth I am 5' 7" and have a Sargeant seat on its low setting.

Whilst on the subject of "things I have tried", I normally ride with a Y-piece and standard pipe which I have always been happy with, but in my "sheepish Tosser" way I tried the stubby pipe with the standard cat. I found this gave me too much deep noisy resonance, which I found very tiring over a long journey, as the exhaust exits nearer to the centre of the bike. I can see that someone wishing to fit a larger lefthand pannier closer to the centre line of the bike might put up with the noise, especially as it would probably be better shielded by the pannier, but for me with standard panniers I prefer the normal exhaust.
Hope this might give some people a little pause for thought.

Must be a more profound difference between the 1150 and 1100 than i thought. I am 6'5 but when I crouch down (with some difficulty) behind the MRA on my bike I'm sitting in still air. no turbulence whatsoever. Sat upright (as normal) i have a breeze - but no buffeting. This is far better than the head battering I had from the original screen which made some rides rather more tiring than should be the case.

So.. on the 1100 (at least) I think the MRA could be the perfect solution - but then maybe whats my idea of 'perfect' is rather different to someone elses.
