Riding for even 10 mins down the road at this time of year seems to cover my GS1150 in road crud almost instantaneously, especially around the engine and rearshock areas.

I've read the various threads on front extenders and huggers, neither which seem to do a good job of it judging by people's comments.

Has anyone discovered an effective method of keeping these machines better protected from the elements ?

And we all know they're a bugger to clean too.

Get a green tarpaulin about 18ft square.
Fold it in half
On the fold , about 6ft from both ends cut slots 6" x 2ft
Unfold and lay flat on your garage floor
Wheel your bike onto the slots
Sit on your bike

Get a willing assistant to pull tarpaulin up and over both you and the machine
Tie at top with strong string or twine

Get assistant to cut small eye holes, taking care not to injure rider
Also cut hole for left or right foot to aid balance at traffic lights etc

If intended ride is during night time foul weather, extra holes may be cut to allow lights to shine out

When you return from you ride, your bike will have remained largely clean.

Tip... Remember to have a mobile phone in your possesion. You will have to phone your assistant to undo string/twine on your return.

It's going to get (in teh voice of Christina Agggggulearia) "dirrrrrrty" No getting around it, apart from the tarpauline....I spray Scotoiler F355 (?) on it, 6GBP from Hein Gericke...I'll tell you in Sprin g if it is any good....

Let your bike build up a thick protective outer crust of crud, come spring, out with the jet wash, hey presto, sparkling pristine shiny new bike.:sunshine
 
I took the german rear mudguard thing off and replced it with a plastic dustpan (with the handle cut off) which I attached to the bottom of the rear number plate. Kept all the shit off my top box at least.

Real class...then we wonder why other riders think BMW owners are odd!

In future I'd recomend retaining a little bit of style when modding the GS and saving the attachments of friggin dustpans to MZ's and the like

Ask a simple question...and you get maniacs suggesting I tie dustbins to my rear end and/or going about like Demis Roussos in a canvas tent or simply driving thru the Tescos car wash - thanx Will for that typical response!

I think I will shut up and cover the whole thing in Vaseline & forget about it for the winter.

Sorry to stray back on topic, but don't hide the bike away!

A hugger really helps keep the muck off your shock absorber, the Scottoier FS365 is the bees conkers. I think they've won 'product of the year' awards for it.

And keep your indicator lenses safe, the Italian for string is "corda" :D
 
Vaseline

Vaseline aside, I'm still going to be riding the thing thru the winter.

I've got some Scottoiler spray and have been applying it since October - no rusty bits yet so it must be working.

I'll have my personal bike valet Will Statt give it a thorough clean every week at Tescos.
 
Re. muck, the GS is a pig to clean, so I only do it twice a year, once before winter, and once after. Pre salt season (November), I spend a day cleaning it, cover everything except the tyres and brakes in waxoyl, ride it all winter (it looks like shit), then steam clean it at Easter. Ideal for rufty tufty all year round snow, ice, salted road type bikers. It works for me. If you don't like a dirty GS, go buy a plastic rocket (although I've fitted 17" wheels as they're meaner, better handling, and (ahem) easier to clean.

I have used a 4--5 inch black gutter cut to size and fixed to the front mudguard works well for me anyway...
