Hi all,

I fitted a Mudsling to my 2010 GSA, with Esa, today.

Although it's expensive for a bit of plastic, it seems like a good bit of kit.

My question is, in the instructions it says to remove the Bmw spring cover, and then fit the Mudsling....

...but I managed to fit it without any issues, it doesn't touch, it doesn't rub, it fits fine.

I've not given it an intensive road test yet....but has anyone else kept the original cover guard on, without problems?...or do I need to take it off?

I did wonder if having it left on makes cleaning the spring/swing arm/battery area difficult..so thus defeating the object of the Mudsling?...or won't it get grimy now the Mudsling is on?

Any info gratefully received :thumb2

.....and go easy on me for not following the instructions :augie

I fitted one last week but did take the cover off as per the instructions. I considered trying it with it in but it looked a bit close to me - about 5mm or so - and I didn't want it catching with any force as I went along, especially with the bike being brand new.

Not what you asked but hey ho! :D

I just fitted a Mudslinger to my 2009 GS with esa and also left the BMW cover on. The Mudslinger and the spring cover just touch, but as neither covers move I left it as is. So far no problems

The two covers on mine don't touch....about 5mm as mentioned..

...but if they did touch through vibration I was considering applying a rubber spacer between them....or just remove the oe cover :augie

If you take off the mudsling and put a bit of self adhesive foam in the channels where it fits the frame you will find it gives extra clearance to the shock protector.

Daft question then - what's the point of leaving it on? The mudsling provides the same protection and more so it doesn't add any extra protection and if anything gets in the way of cleaning the spring :nenau Unless of course it's just a case of not beng arsed to undo 3 bolts :augie :)

Had heard of that option of adjustment..but thought that would bring it too close to the wheel. And logically I'd rather take the oe cover off than effect the wheel.

Left it on cos when offering it up it didn't seem to be anywhere near the BMW cover, so didn't see the point in taking it off? It's all protection after all.

I thought I'd fit it and see if it was in the way, and remove it if it was....but it's not....it's just one of those close calls, it seems alright, but might not be enough to allow for vibration/movement?

....the reason I asked the question is it's alright looking ok sat in the garage, or after a quick spin..but will 1,000's of miles see it rubbing with use.

I'm probably going to take it off..as you say it's only 3 screws..and I think it will be a nightmare cleaning off any grime that does find its way to the spring with both covers fitted.

...that and it says to in the instructions! :augie

Just went into the garage armed with my spanners.....

.....and I just keep looking at the oe cover wondering why I'm taking it off??? :nenau

....I've tried rattling, shaking, pushing, the Mudsling....but still it doesn't foul the existing cover? :nenau

....I'm going on a 400 mile trip at the weekend...if I have no troubles, then I'll keep it on...

...will be taking a spanner with me though! :augie

OFF

Just fitted one to my 09 non ESA,took shock cover off, mudsling didnt touch but they said take it off,and i figure they must have done reseach so if they say take it off........+ real easy to clean the spring............:Motomartin

left mine in place on my 2010 GSA with ESA Ive done over 2k miles on it now and everything seems ok to me
it fitted easy enough with the original guard still in place so why remove it?:nenau

My feelings exactly!

Apart from future ease of cleaning around the spring I can't see the point at the moment. :thumb2

Really needed to know if long term vibration/movement would be an issue..but you've put my mind at rest...thanks :thumb2

Remove

I say remove it. It will improve air flow and cooling - may not be a big issue for most, but you know that desert adventure :augie A weight loss, small but :) Easier to keep the area clean :thumb2
