'Must do' fuel tank mod

Just modded my 12 today, I left the rubber piece in the neck for now as I think that the mod will remove the need to oick it out.

I'm not 100% certain that the grommet went back in straight. I found it difficult to ascertain.

Still if there's no pong of leaking fuel I hope I'm alright.

Well I'm glad everybody is finding the pictures so useful, only took me a few minutes to put together. Don't forget, the idea was Dutchmans after all not mine:)

The only thing that I did different to GSMonkey was to put the rag in the tank before removing the screws, as per Dutchman, for obvious reasons. :D

I must admit, I did the first time I stripped it down. The second time I just kept the filler cap closed. I suppose the only risk is that one of the wedges could fall in the tank............I'll put a note on the instructions (Edit: Instructions modified]

An apology......

Very sorry guys, that I didn't provide a blow by blow photographic account of my mod...... I actually took a dozen photographs but thought it would be a tad patronising to string them all together for public consumption...... ;)

I should have remembered that not everyone is as gifted, experienced and downright talented as myself in the technical department.....

Sincere thanks to GSmonkey for doing it for everyone's benefit.... :D

I promise to try harder next time.......

Cheers :beerjug:

Don't think you have to worry about being patronising!!! The only bit I was concerned about was stipping the panels off on my new bike, but once you've done it a couple of times its no hassle.

GS Monkey.......well done on that one......If you could email me the pics, I'll stick them in a FAQ in the tech section.

Many thanks

Disclaimer

If it all goes wrong and you trash your bike its Dutchman's fault:D

Done it! Easy peasy, thanks to the user guide. Just keep the drill on slow and it bites much better.

Ta muchly Dutch & Monkey-Dude

Good news is without even brimming it, with all town work and heavy throttle use, it goes to 170miles before it indicates x miles to empty, it was doing that after 130miles.........result as far as I'm concerned:D

Here's a pictorial step-by-step. Hope it helps somebody:)

Printed this out.....

Toddled off to the garage, and hour later I was back indoors with a cup of coffee in my hand!

Only negative was that i couldn't clean the burr off the inside of the filler pipe very well.....

Instructios are perfect! :bow :bow :bow :bow

I've stuck this up as a separate thread as the original is not obviously titled.

My fuel range has typically been 160-170 miles before the reserve light comes on.

Yesterday I did the fuel tank mod as described by Dutchman and was for the first time able to completely fill the tank. On today's ride out I did 199.5 miles before the reserve light came on, indicating an overall range of 245 miles.

Well worth doing.

Tim

Tim, are you going to do this on your Adventure?

Yes - the spare space in the tank is to allow for expansion if the fuel gets hot, and to allow some room for it to slosh around before it goes down the overflow pipe. You might find if you brim your tank and then put the bike on the side stand, fuel will come out of the overflow.

So it's best only to fill it very full if you know you are going to ride a fair distance immediately.

Especially if you live in a warm climate, this mod is not really advisable,as the fuel expands and flows over even on the centre stand, and with current fuel prices...
