My attempt at a BMW R100RR (or, why should desert sleds have all the fun)

sounds unanimous, bmw axle it is.

and i have a small update... my motogadget m-unit arrived today. will be a week or so before i get a chance to play but looks impressive from the outside. and the single control unit that sends all the handlebar signals with one wire is TINY!

manufacturer link is: http://motogadget.com/en/electrics/...m-unit-digit-tastersteuerung-u-sicherung.html

btw i have no affiliation with the manufacturer nor the UK re-seller

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/IMG_20140204_151405.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/IMG_20140204_151405.jpg" border="0" alt="moto photo IMG_20140204_151405.jpg"/></a>

Ok, I've had a chance to explore options for the axle but there are two problems:

1. The BMW axle is two short
2. There are only washing machine bearings that fit the ID and OD of the KTM axle and as these are rated C0, not C3 there are likely issues re heat and expansion.... Meaning I could be all waged up as a rider (sorry).

So based on the photo below, I have a cunning plan. Tomorrow I shall ask Mr Cray if he can magic up a suitable axle using these parts to keep down costs..... Or to make complete new on if I'm being an idiot.. As seem to be the only idiot not using a KTM wheel!

<ahref="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/IMG_20140210_183720.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/IMG_20140210_183720.jpg" border="0" alt="axles photo IMG_20140210_183720.jpg"/></a>

Any thoughts before I begin down this path?

After a brief hiatus, tomorrow the next steps begin. Whilst I had a momentary delusion that I should resolve my short axle issues myself.... But I don't have the engineering facilities or any skills :-) So the forks, hub and axle are off to Mr Cray to get something that works and is safe.... Next step wheels! Questions to come soon.

600A - Venhill Dual Rate Single Cable Twist Grip.... is this the best option?

at the moment i have a Domino throttle that needed a fair bit of fettling to work on my single pull / cable junction to make them all work, such as shortening the fitting where the cables join and filling the cam in the Domino.... but the cable sticks out the front in a most unseemly manner. so i wanted to check, is the 600A - Venhill Dual Rate Single Cable Twist Grip the best option and does it have enough travel for 40mm Bings?

next update soon when i get my forks back from Jim Cray.....

For wheels and axles keep as many standard unmodified parts as you can. Then use special spacers and different bearings if necessary. A spacer (or bracket for that matter) is easy to make so low cost.

I once fitted a Ducat 450 fork with Brembo caliper, and Suzuki front wheel to a Norton Featherbed frame. All done with spacers and various original parts. I bought a house and (stupidly) sold the bike before the project got finished, but all it needed was a set of stiffer fork springs.

looks like a great project , my r100r came with an adjustable paralever strut but i too it off when i sold the bike

like the ones in the list below. it came from motor works but its not on there at the moment. looks the same as the 1100 one.

heres a bit of the blurb

adjustable paralever strut from MV Verholen.
It replaces the original torque arm giving a more sporty appearance, higher ground clearance, more stable and quicker steering especially round sharp bends.
Takes around 5 minutes to adjust with a spanner, you can individually set you machine at any time to your own requirements.
they're £260 new this ones in excellent condition £90 posted ?

pm me if your interested :beerjug:

standard axle it is! thanks for the thoughts on this one. Jim Cray is going to work his magic on it as i began to feel progress bogging down. sleeving the fat end or the skinny end and adding some off cuts from a another cut up BMW 1150 axle looks a possibility (used to do it with carbon tubes and masts when i sailed and it works a treat). but he is the expert so we'll see what he comes up with to bridge the missing ~5cm.

and peepingtom, there is a PM coming re the adjustabe paralever strut, but i admit that from my understanding that due to the shock mount on the hub of the R100R/GS paralevers, there was very little hub pivot and little to be gained on an airhead. this is opposed to a R11X0 where the rear hub can pivot independently to the shock and swingarm, therefore offering greater benefits for changing height, such as when you add a GS arm to an R1100s (but not some of the Boxer Cups which already have a short arm). this is why Mr Cray built me a bracket to extend the shock mount towards the rear hub, there by getting almost to GS "shock length" with a relatively cheap bit of metal work. i'll get a photo of it when i can find it. it works well and quickens steering a ride height, but i will reserve it for track days to avoid wearing out whatever GS's wear out due to the angle!

that said i am new to all this so will defer to those with more experience! PM still coming!!

and sorry for the long explaination, but i am australian, so english is my second language ;-)

after some consideration and looking at a increasing depleated budget i am going to pass on the adjustable strut. instead i am going to put my "shock extender" back in place to raise the rear end to keep the steering angle steeper to help turning with the fatter tyre.

i've added some pictures below to give people and idea of the handy attachment.

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/IMG_20140226_093141.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/IMG_20140226_093141.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20140226_093141.jpg"/></a>

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/IMG_20140304_151208.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/IMG_20140304_151208.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20140304_151208.jpg"/></a>

swingarm and wheel offset

OK, things are moving ahead on the wheels!

my rear wheel is down at devon rims and will be laced up when time allows.

the wheel consists of an r100r (gs) hub and a 17x4 r1100 rim.

so the question is, what offset should i ask for!

i have the following measurements, looking from the back of the bike:
left side of singarm and frame: 3.92
right side of singarm and frame: 4mm
gap between 140 bt45 and swingarm 4.79mm

the new tyre will be a 150 michelin road pilot 4, and if wheel or swingarm and not moved, will leave a -0.2mm gap if the tyre is exactly 10mm wider than the 140 bt45.

so, how far can i move the swingarm to the right, the whole 4mm? if so i can get a 4mm offset and have a centred tyre. if the tyre is a little wider, i am thinking shaving a few mm of edge is not going to kill me.... so to speak. the other option is to run a bigger offset and have the tyre not centred by a bit.

be great to get peoples thoughts who have done this before on the best option!

more eye candy

just got the last bits needed to finish the electrics. momentary buttons from highway dirtbikes in the states, as used by a gentleman with a lovely GS on ADVR. i have 2 buttons to go on the clutch lever for the indicators, and 3 buttons on the left hand pertch:

top - start/kill
middle - lights (hi, lo, flash) all from the same button
bottom - horn

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/IMG_20140311_200725.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/IMG_20140311_200725.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20140311_200725.jpg"/></a>

there is also a sump plug temperature unit that goes into the already mounted Acewell dash. still waiting for the wheels and forks to make there way back from down south i.e. south of London, so that looks like being the major blocker to completion... along with me having a touch of projectitis.... just got a 2008 Suzuki GSXR 600/750 front end for my 1992 Ducati 900ss. not just for the better forks, but for a wheel that is lighter than a boat anchor. i will also be cutting a few feet of steel from the frame and removing the lights so it will be interesting to see how that goes come the summer!

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/IMG_20140311_194240.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/IMG_20140311_194240.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20140311_194240.jpg"/></a>

well, between waiting for wheels, a gear box re-build and a focus on track days, the summer went pretty slowly with the airhead...... :-/

the ducati has been awesome fun though! i did some road registered days at Cadwell, including one with Robert and the guys from the BMW riders club

I even did two levels of the California Superbike School and finally understand how to go around corners, though there is still lots to learn.

trouble is i went and started a new project with a 1098s frame and an 1100 2v engine.....

but back to the BM..... on wednesday i picked up my bike from Jim Cray with the wheel built, gearbox re-built and the machining done on stem and spacers to fit the front end. this is the best bit.

now i just need to stick it all together and find out if i have enough clearance between tank and forks/bars so i can actually steer the thing!!

and a picture of the 900ss without bodywork .... i'll keep this to BMW stuff only after this, but as it was an air cooled 2 valve twin, thought a few photos wouldn't do any harm :-)

stage one complete! sure my headlight is tied on with string, but everything seemed to work in the 200m ride so far. so i'm pretty happy considering i don't have a proper shed to work in with a table, vice etc.... so yeah, pretty happy :-)

still need to do the electrics and extend the cables as the GS bars don't fit, and not sure it is in proportion with the 17x2.5 inch rim on the front but this is definitely a work in progress that i am enjoying a lot. especially looking forward to developing the handling as much as developing the looks. bike seems very sprightly with the smaller front wheel and shorter off-set, but only had a very short ride so far.

the staring point

the bits

my crappy work space care/of the local self storage!

result!

mmmmm not sure of the proportions yet..... but it is growing on me :-)

key details are

Forks:
KTM 950 Supermoto 4860 forks, currently standard

Front Wheel:
BMW R100R rear rim 17x2.5
BMW R1150 GS Hub
Bridgestone T30 110/17 tyre

Brakes:
BMW R1150 Rockster 320mm disc
Suzuki GSXR K6 600 19mm radial master cylinder (was lying around and i "think" the KTM is 19mm standard)
KTM 950 Supermoto Brembo Radial calipers, with 10mm spacer (std KTM has 310mm discs)

Rear Wheel:
BMW R100R hub
BMW R1100r or GS 17x4
Bridgestone T30 150/17

steering stem and axle spacers machined by Jim Cray so that it all just bolts together!

one step closer! Motogadget m-unit installed and a temporary loom in place. so added the GS bars and the highway dirt bike switch gear. just need to put the Acewell dash back on and I'll be sorted.... well, sorted enough to start the Ducati build.....

work in progress.......

almost ready for the trip to Tuscany, with a stop in at Mugello!

painting and dash still to be done but the major structural stuff is sorted. wind protection was the main issue i wanted to look after so mounted an S fairing to an RS sub-frame.

i have seen a few mounted this way on line but really wanted to keep the fairing low and as close to the "proper" S position as possible, so cut away a section from the head stock mount to move the sub-frame lower, then cut the lower arms and made some temporary mounts and persuaded the upper arms to their new position and am finally happy with the results! I had to use the R100R headlight shell as the RS light shell was too long and pushed the fairing out too far when lined up.

sorry for the rubbish photos but i finished in the dark..... as usual! more photos to follow once i am not rushing. and before anyone says anything, i'm add an old style seat after the trip, when i don't need to carry a girlfriend and a top box, hopefully in time for the classic bike mag track day at Cadwell.

OK so where were we :)

So, i am part way along the journey and the bike currently looks liks this.... with the main changes being:
zx6r master cylinder which has tranformed the brakes, it is 1mm smaller in diameter and the brakes now have fantastic feel, much better than the woden feel as standard.... and i think it looks cool!oh i have replaced the bent bit of alloy since the picture...
<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/1618550_10153737280965075_1198143344_n.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/1618550_10153737280965075_1198143344_n.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 1618550_10153737280965075_1198143344_n.jpg"/></a>

I also put an acewell dash and motogadget flasher wich reduced so much wire and relay boxes that it was amazing. Along with the new switch gear there is not a huge amount or BMW wire left! And more will go when i fit the motogadget M-Unit and M-Button
<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/1618550_10153737280950075_334904825_n.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/1618550_10153737280950075_334904825_n.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 1618550_10153737280950075_334904825_n.jpg"/></a>

Here is the zx6r clutch lever and Ducati 900ss (1992) left hand switch gear that i borrowed from my other bike.
<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/1545121_10153737280955075_280694916_n.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/1545121_10153737280955075_280694916_n.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 1545121_10153737280955075_280694916_n.jpg"/></a>

I also moved the key to the headlight as i didn't know where else to put it. i used some connectors from the local plumbing store which looks a bit different but i think sort of works.
<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/1536455_10153737280960075_596256041_n.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/1536455_10153737280960075_596256041_n.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 1536455_10153737280960075_596256041_n.jpg"/></a>

I also hacked around with the tail, removing the passenger handle as it looked too bulky.
<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/1560554_10153737280710075_986337923_n.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/1560554_10153737280710075_986337923_n.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 1560554_10153737280710075_986337923_n.jpg"/></a>

The bike is still used as a b it of a work horse so i still need to have panniers and a place to tie things.....
<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/GetAttachment.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/GetAttachment.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo GetAttachment.jpg"/></a>

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/photo.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/photo.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo.jpg"/></a>

So what's next.

I have two points of inpiration, especially after testing a R100GS before i bought this bike. Woeful brakes but lots of fun with the high wide bars. I am sure everyone has seen these but so you can see where i am coming from......
For the R100RR / R100 Boxer Cup sort ot thing (more on that later).
<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/1-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/1-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 1-1.jpg"/></a>

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/01InspirationTestScheffBMW7-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/01InspirationTestScheffBMW7-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 01InspirationTestScheffBMW7-1.jpg"/></a>

And for the london commuter and shopping carrier / Super Moto sort of thing:

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/i-xX6XzsR-M.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/i-xX6XzsR-M.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo i-xX6XzsR-M.jpg"/></a>

I especially like the way they put the swingarm on the other side with this bike :)
<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/andrewinuk_photo/media/BMW%20R100R/01Inspirationgsstylee.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm223/andrewinuk_photo/BMW%20R100R/01Inspirationgsstylee.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 01Inspirationgsstylee.jpg"/></a>

I think they put everry thing on the uther side strange way of just macking work for your self :nenau
