My attempt at a BMW R100RR (or, why should desert sleds have all the fun)

I think they put everry thing on the uther side strange way of just macking work for your self :nenau

Not sure if you're being THAT serious - built by WMB (see the engine) and the OP's smiley are clues as to how it was done.....

ready for the trip!

All sorted for the trip to Tuscany, thanks to the lovely gentlemen from Bikeshuttle! I shall be meeting my newly purple R100 in Geneva tomorrow lunchtime for a ride to the coast..... easy!

The ride from London to Northampton to drop the bike off was trouble free and the fairing did its job well. I couldn't feel any instability and wind protection was good, pretty happy with the results but I may lower it further at some stage when I make a new subframe from scratch rather than use an RS frame.

So whilst the bike is not 100% finished (are they ever?!?), it is painted, serviced, wired and even had a noisy rocker arm shimmed.

The bike now looks, to the casual observer, much like it did earlier in it's life but it is now much more like the bike i originally envisaged. Once i'm back from Italy, i'll make a new seat and prep it for a track day, but for now, i'll just enjoy riding it :-)

t'was a good day out with the BMW riders club

all went well with the old girl at the BMW riders club day at Snetterton, but i need to balance the steering a bit.

when going through a turn i had to keep pressure on the top bar to stop the bike from keep leaning over further, it felt much less balanced than the 900ss where i just about let go of the bars! needs a bit of research to sort that out as so much has changed over standard (wider rear tyre, shorter fork/stem offset, small front tyre, longer forks, harder rubber) unless someone has a general tip!

and i wish i'd seen the pics before the end of the day as i'd have leaned over more...... i was a little too paranoid about crashing / touching the heads down, but had miles to go!!

thanks to Picman for the "loan" of the photo.

I think we shared a garage at Snetterton on Monday. I was the guy asking you what the bike was based off, didn't realise it had a thread in here!

I was very impressed with both the bike and your riding. To keep up in the fast group was very impressive :clap

Ah, you are too kind! And indeed the fast group was a bit tricky at times..... mainly on the two main straights where people would come past at what seemed 50mph faster..... I guess that is possible when there is a 140hp difference in the bikes!! I practically gave myself whiplash watching them go past :-)

Corners weren't to bad though so fun was definitely had.

Looking forward to next year at Cadwell already, so hope to see you there.

Same here, had my first time at Cadwell this year and I'm hooked already!

And I thought I had an issue on straights with the R1100S :D

As someone who's never ridden on any track, can I ask a stupid question - what speeds do road bikes attain on the straights on a track like Cadwell? Just out of interest...

I wish i could answer accurately but my Acewell speedo has been misbehaving.... but i was at redline in top on both straights at Snetterton and on the long straight at Cadwell it would be the same. I guess it would be somewhere around 115-120? But i may be waaaayyyyy optimistic. If someone knows what an R100R top speed i'd be pleased to hear!

But for me a track day (luckily) is about corners and I tend to roll off a tad on the straights at top speed to try to not kill the poor old thing by sitting on the redline. At Snetterton on the straights i was thinking it could do with having longer legs, but as I already have a higher 5th gear so i wondering about the final drive. I was doing a lot of thinking as those straights felt very long on my bike :-)

Andrew

Bit of a long shot but came across this thread while looking for info on an R100R i have just bought, planning on doing somthing similar with the wheels and have bought the 17 rim from a GS to convert the rear wheel, I couldnt find the final offset you went with for the rear wheel and final tyre size? Could you let me know how you got on with these clearances etc ?

Hey there,

I can't recall the off-set to be honest, but it is purely based on how far to the right you take the swingarm for tyre clearance.

I think it was only 5mm - 10mm rim to left of hub looking from the back of the bike to keep the rim/tyre central. This was just to give a little more clearance for the 150 width tyre on the 4 inch rim by moving the swingarm all the way to the right.

Sorry i can't be more help as away from home for a week so can't measure......

Andrew

Thanks Andrew

No rush maybe if you get a chance you could have a look on your return.

Paul

Hi Andrew

Any news on the offset etc ? I would also be keen to know who you used for the wheel building.

Took the whole bike apart now so wheel build is now near the top of the list.

Regards

Sounds like you had a great day out. I have a few questions but am not subscribed as I live too far away to make use of the for sale section ... what is the best email address to reach you on?

Hey there,

Sorry for the long delay, but bikes have unfortunately taken a back seat over the last few months.....

But I had Doug from Devon Rims build the wheel, but he did the offset the wrong way :-/

So Jim Cray had to re-align it using some new spokes from Doug.

I also use hagon to build these wheels and they are pretty good and A LOT FASTER than anyone else. Thinking i'll only use them going forward......

I'll try to get to the shed and measure the offset by Wednesday :-)

Cheers

So, it's been a while since i've posted about my bike so thought i'd add some photos. Not much change but did a day with Classic Bikes at Cadwell last year before changing the bike from touring mode to Supermoto mode with GS Bars and Mudguard. But it was on a trip to Oxford that I felt the GS gear left me a little exposed..... so ive gone back to what i think are K75 bars, a screen from an R1150R an old Monster Mudguard..... Going back to Oxford this weekend so looking forward to feeling the difference at 80MPH! Going to the Italian Lakes in July so looking to be comfortable on motorways.

Photos sorted..... i've gone back to Photobucket after trying google and drop box, both which seem to make it hard to share on websites rather than social media.... gggrrrrr

thanks and indeed, the trip will be great! :-)

Getting the bike to Geneva with http://www.bikeshuttle.co.uk/ who i used last time and then stopping in at:
- Zermatt
- Lake Maggiore
- Lake Como
- One more night in the alps before dropping the bike in Geneva

Looking forward to some lovely mountain roads!

BTW, in anticipation of the mountain roads with panniers and wife on board, i've upgraded my master cylinder to a used Brembo 19x18 radial master from ebay. It is much nicer to use than the Suzuki master that it replaced with a smoother feel and, from experience on my ducati on a track day where i did the same swap previously, more power that is easier to modulate. Highly recommended upgrade as long as you have the correct match to your calipers.
