I know it's the sensor for the instrument cluster, but I've never seen it illuminate before. Is it indicating a fault in the sensor ?

Is your bike equiped with alarm? The red diode flashing regulary, indicates that the alarm is activated.
If it flashes iregulary, periodic it might indicate a fault! Then i'm at the end of my knowledge.:nenau

No alarm fitted.

i have seen the red light flash occasionally. i associate it with just turning the key and riding off without actually cancelling the alarm.

not sure if you're even supposed to do that, but i just forget sometimes.

er...

No alarm fitted.

best ignore my post (no change there then) :D

Trev, it is infact a camera, it relays pictures back to BMWHQ and shows the faces of riders enjoying themselves, then statistitionmongers in Berlin draw up national grin factor charts for their bikes. We brits are allowed to have lots of fun cos they know we are idiots, but the Germans get their bikes detuned or have sharp electrodes come through the seat and into their bums if the smile to much. You should be OK the krauts don't give a feck if Italy based riders are have fun or not.

It means your bike is possessed by the rebooted ghost of HAL9000, the mad 'puter from "2001 A Space Odyssey".

Don't forget your helmet!

Mine comes on when I hit the red line...mind you that's on my F800ST :)

It actually is the battery monitor,it checks the state of charge comming from the alternator. If the battery is recieving too much charge the light is illuminated thus making a drain on the battery allowing it to take the extra charge from the alternator. You can override it by keeping your heated grips on all the time or by spraying WD40 on to the drive belt alowing it to slip thus reducing its effective charging performance..............................................................................

HONEST

love it

Mate, read your manual, take it to a dealer. I don't think that your are going to get an honest answer here.

Thanks mate.

I did read my manual-that's how I know it's the sensor for the instrument cluster. But,for some reason,BMW don't allocate 6 pages to it's description and workings !

I just thought someone in amongst the usual ****wits here might know, but that would be asking too much.
