My BIL Guenter and my sister fly back to Germany today after he completed an 800km walk called Jakob's Weg over part of the Pyrenese mountains from France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This is an apparently famous pilgrims walk (I think it's called St James's Path over here). It has taken him about 6 weeks and he was walking circa 20-30 kms per day. Getting up day after day knowing you have another 25 kms in front of you must be quite daunting.

My sister flew out a couple of weeks ago and joined him for the last part of the journey. My BIL is 65 years old but a big, strong, strapping guy. He looks 10 years younger but I've no doubt that this must have been hard for him to complete. He finished the walk at the weekend and probably enjoyed a few days in S de C sitting on his backside doing nothing.

Guenter was seriously ill about 20 years ago and this expedition merely confirms my opinion of him as a strong, determined guy.

I respect him immensely :thumb2

That's a very good effort by Guenter - it just shows that age isn't a barrier if you are determined enough.

Not that 65 is considered old these days !

I'll bet he's feeling very proud that he's proved to himself, and others, that he can still 'do it' if he puts his mind to it.

Well done.

Bob.

Well done total respect tae the guy, I ken I couldnae dae it:clap:clap:clap

Well done to your BIL. Sounds a top effort.

One of my customers did that walk, he cycled from the UK to the start of the walk, packed the bike up and posted it to his destination, did the walk then cycled back again, no training before hand, just thought he would do it when he retired. He lost 3 stone and it took him 4 months.

Best thing was the bike, it was one of those dutch big wheel ones with the basket on the front and I think a fixed wheel single speed jobbie:thumb2

Shep

Well done that man:clap:clap

I saw part of that walk a few years ago in Northern spain. Its signposted as the Pilgrims Route if memory serves me correctly.... The things men will do to escape the wife:rolleyes:

AndyT:cool:

Read a good book about that route a few years ago. 'Clear Waters Rising' by Nicholas Crane. He walked across the watershed of Europe from Finisterre to Istanbul, and the first quarter was the pilgrim's trail.

The books probably a bit dated now, his experiences changed hugely when he crossed the old Iron Curtain. He could also teach a few tricks for travelling light, relying on a hat, a brolly and a single burner stove with a metal mug. Who needs tents?

Well done that man, hope yae telt him how well yae thought he'd done.:thumb2

Bob, you never mentioned the girlfriend in Perth...:augie

Eh . . What . . ?

Ronno said 'girlfriends' (plural).

There's life in the old dog yet :D

(p.s. Not a word to SWMBO  ).

See you at 'The Gathering' ? (I'll be late on Friday - showing a horse at the Highland Show that day :blast).

Bob.
