Sometimes you need to uninstall the current version of Garmin Express, then download and install the latest version direct from the Garmin website

I tried and tried to get my MacBook to recognise my Garmin XT. It wouldn’t. I tried the fixes suggested on this forum without success.

I solved the problem by migrating from Basecamp to MRA and transferring routes and tracks seamlessly by Bluetooth. Perhaps not the solution you were looking for but an option nonetheless

What operating system are you on Mac or PC?

The MacBook will never recognise the XT. The XT uses the Android file system. If you want your MacBook to see the XT (in the file finder) you need an emulator program. The Mac book will see the XT via Garmin express for updates, but as others have said, the Garmin devices are very fussy as to which cable to use. The best option is find the Garmin cable and use that.

I knew I was right not to get an XT :D

For Windows 11 open Garmin express. If you are not on the latest version of GE it should prompt you to upgrade, if it does upgrade. The latest version is 7.24.0.0. You can force an upgrade by opening GE and going to Settings>About>Check for updates to Express. Don't open Basecamp at the same time as GE as they interfere with each other.

Use the lead that came with your Garmin/Nav IV it should have Garmin stamped on the USB (A) end that plugs into your computer.
Later Garmin units seem to want to connect to computers using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) and it can take a while before the device is recognised and shown in Windows file explorer,1-2 minutes this is how my Garmin Zumo XT behaves my older 340, 390 and Nav IV connect much more quickly.

My preference is for GE NOT to run in the background which is its default setting and to load it myself. If you are still having trouble with express try plugging the unit in to your computer and not starting GE. The unit should appear after a couple of minutes in Windows file explorer. Also when you launch express try launching it as "Run as Administrator" in case some account user permissions are stopping GE accessing MTP devices.

Its not so much as the XT runs a version of Android so do the old units but the XT insists on using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)......something which the apple world hasn't got built in, though I do believe that there is an add-on apple utility that allows MTP devices to be recognised......which includes Android Phones, Cameras and Garmin navigation devices. (not completely sure though as my only apple product is an Ipad.) Berin's or Wappings yer man for Garmin and iOS :D

One commander is the utility, but I have never bothered as I can manage without it, not a power user

I've had trouble with this..
1. Make sure you have a proper Data cable. The one that comes with the sat nav should be OK, It will have "Garmin" stamped om the USB end.

2. If Mapsource cannot see your Nav 5 or 6
You need to change the MTP settings from Auto to Manual. They are not easy to find. There are 2 methods.

1. On the Startup page Showing "Where to" and "View map" Press the "Volume" button. Now press and hold the top right hand corner of the Master Volume screen for over 5 secs. This will get you to the Diagnostics page.

OR

2. Go to the "View Map" page and press the 3 bars on the bottom right. Scroll down to the "Trip Computer" now Press and hold the "D" shaped thing showing speed -mph- for over 5 secs.
This will get you to the Diagnostics page.

On the Diagnostics page scroll down all the way to "MTP settings" Select it and then select "Mass Storage" The default seems to be "Auto detect" but this will not work with Mapsource.

Select "Save" that's it. Press the back button a few times to get you back to where you started.

Sometimes it takes a very long time to recognise the Sat nav.
On my computer, I know it has done so because I get a warning about a damaged (?) drive which I ignore. -THEN you will be able to see the Nav in File Explorer or Finder or whatever it's called.

Good luck. Do let us know if you managed to get it to connect and down load the maps
