Just back from my first ever visit to the South of Ireland (I've been in the North loads now). It was a family holiday, mother's day and all that....this was a 5 day trip with plans to cover a lot of miles and also a bit of a recce for me to see where and what I would like to see some point later when I come back with the bike

We arrived at Shannon, pick up the wreck from Irish Car Rentals and headed for the first night's stay in Galway (stayed at the Best Western which was good). Stopped at the Cliffs of Moher on the way to the hotel which if I was honest took my breath away, simply stunning and was rewarded with a really beautiful sunset as well as an incredibly opportunistic shot....

On the Thursday morning everyone was up early and we hit the road, heading for Dublin. Pulled into Roscommon to do the family ancestry thing (there are family links going back through the ages) and was amazed by the local sign....really liked the town, loved the laid back village life that was going on, probably a bit pedestrian for many

Back on the road after lunch and we easily hit Dublin by tea time, went out for Dinner to Boccaccio's, some really nice Italian food and they seem to be winning quite a few prizes (service is good as well). The following day (Friday) was all about seeing bits of Dublin, getting a feel for the city....

If I was honest, I didn't like Dublin, really dirty, far too busy, heavily congested that at times made it feel worse than London (although it gave a good chance to play guess the region from the car number plates - still a few that had me stumped), lastly in Dublin, rubbish piled up high on the main roads - what's all that about? Dublin felt like Ireland on a Stick, lots of parties and drinking, didn't get a feel that there was any substance to the place, I think I was expecting Edinburgh not realising it was a big and busy Capital City, probably more of a Glasgow or Liverpool. Hardly saw or heard any Irish people when I was there which I found a little disappointing, I wanted a little bit of authentic Ireland

Did the bus tour round the city in the afternoon which was great (bus driver was on top form, told lots of old jokes but they were crackers TBH), learnt a lot of the history of the city, probably my favourite bit to be honest (it was a really condensed visit though - suppose you aren't going to get the best out of a place in 1 day)

Met one interesting character in Dublin though, nearly ran him down when I was in the car and couldn't resist a snap when I passed him later on the bus

That evening entailed a visit to the Arlington Hotel (I think) for some real 'Irish' food and entertainment, it was an enjoyable night to be honest with lots of sing-a-long music....

Friday morning, everyone was up and it again and we were heading back towards Shannon although had a hotel booked in Limerick. Lots of fun along the way, chuffed to see that a whole town had been named after me and they even had the bunting out but I suspect the marching band hadn't had a chance to assemble for me....

Driving around the Tipperary area was a sheer joy, it was just so damn beautiful and am very much looking forward to seeing that area again later this year on the bike. I don't think I could say it enough, Scotland is beautiful in a rugged way but this area was just pretty....also stopped in Kilkenny did a tour of the Castle which was fab, again totally loved the town and somewhere that I want to see more of

Lastly, what is it about house colours in the South, did everyone get a job lot on yellow? It was nice to see someone had a bit of individuality though.

So a great but quick 5 day visit, lots of ideas for me to explore later, I loved it, you wouldn't expect me to say otherwise would you? I especially loved Limerick (stayed at the George Boutique Hotel). There was an energy and an excitement about it and a distinct sense of pride from what I could see, something about hope as well. I knew about its 'Stab City' reputation and I hope it overcomes it, somewhere else that I will definitely be visiting in the future, I would love to see how Limerick transforms itself. Lastly, so much more to see, I can't wait to get back on the Emerald Isle, this time on the bike and not a hired coffin......

Hmmm

Seems about right, I guess :nenau

As a Dub, living away from it, I'm up there regularly, but rarely want to linger and try to get back home asap. It does have a lot to offer, but I think you have to be under 25 and single, or else be distinctly well-off and able to insulate yourself from its tackier side..............Its a shame that our cultural acceptance of litter and the apparent lack of pride in the city is changing only very slowly.

Anyways, maybe you'll see another side to it on a subsequent visit........but there's a lot more to Ireland that Dublin - as you clearly saw - so come back soon. Tar ar ais, aris ! :aidan

I managed to soak up loads of the history of Dublin which was great, definitely will visit again some touristy things I didn't have time for, I really loved rural Ireland and the other towns and cities more, some utterly stunning places....:D

Didn't make it to the Temple Bar though....sounds like I had a near miss....:augie

As Speedo says, don't judge us by Dublin ;)

Wait 'til ya see what we have in store for youse in July. You'll be on roads & see things most Irish people haven't been to. Whether you go on the off-road with Daithi or the road run with Aidan & myself you're in for a treat :aidan
