My first service cost me £250.00 from BMW Park Lane - it seems rather pricey to me

No worries, I'm an easy going chappie - takes far more than that to get me going... something like being ripped off by a greedy dealer... now that gets me going

Both my 6k and 12k services were less than that and that was on an RT with all the plastic to take off and replace! BTW the oil was even more than £44.84 because of the VAT - more like £52.69. So £13 a litre for lawnmower oil (as my old dealer used to call it)

I saw the man at BVM yesterday,and told him about this.He just shook his head when I told him about how much they charged for the oil.The man he was talking to,just happened to be one of the heads of technical things at Mbw,who was visiting the shop.His ears definatly pricked up when I said about the oil.I think he took it away with him as well,he didn't look very impressed at all.

In my local bike shop, Castrol GP is 14 quid for 4 litres.

First service, yesterday, on my 1200 at John Clark Aberdeen, as I was reminded when I booked it in "You do know that BMW no longer pay for the first service, you should have been told when you bought it". Doesn't matter as I was expecting to pay after what I read on here.
So:
Seal ring: £0.25
Oil filter: £7.45
Oil Castrol GP 20/50: £25.20
Labour (more than usual as we had to remove and refit your engine bars): £141.44
Therefore inc vat = £204.85

Small point, on all my Jap bikes the first service wasn't free, you just didn't pay for the labour.
So:

Not that stunning really. 2005 shows profits of €60M from the motorcycle division so about £425 per bike. By the time profits on parts and clothing sales are stripped out, the profit on each new bike sold is not all that high.
Strange fact: The US and Italian markets are the same size for BM!

had my 12 Adv 1st service done last week at Astle in grimsby, I knew i would pay as i got mine from Park Lane, they quoted me 150 as the supplying dealer, Astle charged me £185 and fed me free coffee for the time it took, happy enough

Defence for Park Lane
OK, I have had my bike serviced at Park Lane.
My first service was indeed done there. I cant recall the price though.
However, I must come to their defence. At least in my experience they treated me well. They determined the battery was defective, lent me a brand new R1200 ST to ride around with until the new battery was replaced. They were the ones who alerted me to the bash plate update (rubber bungs). They even replaced the HP2 pump for free because it fell off somewhere on the road.
Maybe they have charged a bit more than usual, Ive not compared prices, but I will be doing my future services there.
However, in light of the information priced in this thread I will challenge them on parts, oil etc... before parting with my hard earned cash.

Get used to it...however, feeling the pain that comes from being ripped off by these places for their oil alone, might I suggest that the GS Club contacts a Silkolene rep and become a dealer for the oil? Before you say ''Yeah right''...we have done this local to where I live and now enjoy purchasing oil at trade prices.
One small thing but will save quite a few £ every service.

Nip down to Costco, you'll get 20 ltrs of Chevron 15w-40 (mineral oil) for approx.£19, or 4 ltrs Chevron 5w-40 (fully synthetic) for £12. Or even better you'll be lucky as I was a month or two ago and get 4 ltrs Mobil 4T Racing oil 15w-50 (fully synthetic) for £9.
Any dealer will allow you to take along your own oil to be put in - if it complies with warranty standards.
