Pouring down here today so I decided to do something about a better mounting for my Garmin GPS. Currently fitted using a ram mount with the ball clamped to the bars. This meant looking down to it, so not ideal.

I decided to fit it above the speedo which gives a direct line of sight. I know that ready-made mounts are available to do this but at £85 a pop, they are not for me. This mod cost a tenner for the ball.

I made up an aluminium support bracket that sits under the intrument cover, drilled through and mounted a 'Ram' ball, using medium 'locktight' on the countersunk screw.

The wiring runs through the back of the console up to the GPS.
The end result is a firm mounting with a direct view of the GPS screen. My windscreen is still adjustable down to as low as I would ever want it.

For security I have removed the Ram 'turn-buckle' and replaced it with an internal 'hex' bolt and nylock.

I doubt this mod would be strong enough for serious off-roading but for normal road work, no problem.

Gary.
