My GS issues but "No biggies".

I'd like to report that so far with 7.5K on the clock only problem was a left turn signal switch going "kaput". Fixed under warranty, along with a new "banjo bolt" in the master cylinder, to fix some sorta braking issue I haven't had or was aware of until I got the recall in the mail, and a little cable clip to keep the ABS sensor wire away from the front brake rotor.
Cheers to Chicago BMW for the quick in an out repairs. It rained today so I guess the dealer was slow,but hey it works for me!!!
Feel bad for those with bigger problems,like rear end bearings, or oil leaks.
I've had my share of lemons with auto's and other things in life. Everyone takes a turn I guess.....

Already put a new Anakee on the rear at 7.5K front still good,probably coulda' made 8k easily but why push it. Next time we'll go B-stones 020's.
Love the power,ergo's,and even the gas mileage. Averaging 230miles per tank easily,about 45mpg's, before I get gas. Got 50mpg's once,that was with the wife on back driving "sanely"
So far, very happy with the bike. Only thing I miss is not having enough coverage from rear wheel spray in wet conditions.

Its nice to hear a GS user with normal minor traits as to all the doom and gloom stuff thats going on with GS bikes on this forum.

After reading some of them I feel like taking my bike to the cliffs (quite high were I live) and push the bloody thing off in anticipation of all the things that will go wrong with it.

However I then thought how many people own these bikes compared to the peeople like us who actually write on these forums to complain how poorly these bikes are put together, and it sort of puts things into perspective-most people I guess will have nothing more than the problems you are experiencing or else its stuff that will be sorted out under warranty-i.e my discs were warped-new discs and pads fitted no charge thank you very much.

Im sure all the lurkers who have not joined the web site and others like it dont join as they have nowt to talk about as their bikes -the majority are fine-they are probably getting a good fecking laugh at GSER Forum- home for knackered beamers!!!!!!

I think that's probably spot-on. If you look at things like the Ride magazine survey the R1200GS comes out with high ratings on all criteria including quality and reliability. I had a Honda VFR before changing to the GS and the same was true; internet forums full of posts about 'fuelling problems' and 'the VTEC lurch' but other evidence suggests these are minority concerns and that most people are happy with their bikes. While all the stuff about building to cost and so on have some truth in them it could not possibly in the interests of BMW Motorrad to build bikes that would damage their historic repuation.

Complaints

I read that they have now sold over 25,000 1200 GS's and they keep on selling them ! I have had virtually no problems at all with mine buy as the guarantee ends in a few weeks time I asked the dealer from whom I bought it if it ought to have a check over. He put on his helmet, took it for a short run and came back - no problems.

I am now on my 4th new BMW – a 2005 R1200GS. I love the bike. It’s a heap of fun to ride. But it sure has been a pain in the ass.

1. Speedometer died in the first 600 miles – replaced.

2. Recall for banjo bolt.

3. Recall for o-ring replacement in fuel pump.

4. Firmware upgrade to v. 6.”something” – GPS quit working, battery charger wouldn’t charge battery.

5. Firmware upgrade to v.7 – GPS works now but battery still doesn’t charge.

6. Taking the battery in to the dealership today to have it checked.

Like I said, I love this bike but it is starting to get on my nerves.

June '05 12GS 9500 miles

Nothing gone wrong or fallen off (a close call with the pannier mushrooms tho' and I did get my seat replaced under warrenty due to a small tear, but I really wouldn't call these 'issues'). Finish superb. Fuel consumption excellent. Oil consumption practically zilch. I had more problems with my VFR Vtec than this cracking piece of kit.


Have I got a 'wrong 'un' ?
