How wierds that my CCM dualsport did that at the weekend, completely melted the whole indicator unit at the exhaust. My bike is a 644 with a 710big bore conversion and i was running with a scorpion pipe,it was a tad noisey and didnt want to p.ss the neigbours off at 4am so put standard can back on,but it was running well rich and sooty got very hot at the pipe end,so fcuk the locals scorpions back on and i got some cute little cators on there now......:Motomartin

Sorry folks thanks anon pm'er!
BTW the can is standard, I've just lost the cat. Also, I recon when exhaust is pulled away from bike, it's in the right position!

I could have rung the lad who sold it to me but I thought everyone might get a smile from it:D

Oh no. I've looked again.

Notice rear foot peg? Ok that got lost within 30 secs of getting the bike home for the first time and miscalculated the size of bike and took the peg off with a wall whilst reversing.

HAVE I BENT THE STUPID FRAME?

Now I feel like a fool as well. Any ideas? I've a thick skin... I'll take any abuse given:D

The footrest-silencer mounting should not be waggling around like that. There's a sleeved bush inside the mounting on the silencer. It does allow a little free-play but only enough to allow the system to line-up correctly.

Obviously the lower clamp shouldn't move like that either.

I'd take the silencer off, check that the rubber in the upper mounting hasn't disappeared, broken-up or otherwise deteriorated.

When the silencer is off, if you put the mounting bolt through the sleeve, you can move the bush but not much and it shouldn't be slack.

The indicator melting is down to the angle of the silencer being wrong. I doubt very much that the clout sufficient to remove the pillion foot-peg would be enough to twist the rear sub-frame.

Nice!

Definately a problem with the exhaust. I've never seen any play in the can. If it were me I'd take the whole can off, give it a wash then re-assemble the whole thing. It could those shaped metal bit which make the clamp fit better (clear as mud! it will make sense if you take the bit off) have rusted a bit and just need a good file to make everything fit tight again.

The top bit should only have one washer on the back side where the bolt goes in to stop it from chewing into the rubber. The side which attaches to the bike (at least on mine) in only rubber.

If you want photos just give a shout and I'll run out to the garage and take some.

Good Luck

Quick cheap fix, get yourself an indicator shortening kit from Metal Mule (linky here).

Loses the stalk part of the indicator and puts them under the rear rack more, and more importantly, out of the exhaust flow - also handy should you drop the bike :D

The collar where the exhaust joins the y-piece should be tight, as should the rear bracket. I seem to remember the chrome piece has the clamp that holds the exhaust onto the y-piece pipe. It's a bit fiddly to tighten.

I found when I fitted my y-piece I had to pack the rear bracket out with the washers to make it fit properly.

I think that part of the frame would take quite a bit of bending, I dont like what is going on down at the join though. but whether its going to stop the business end aiming at your indicator.:nenau

Oh, that's good news. BTW, the waggle of the pipe (sounds a bit rude eh:hug) is really not that bad when the connecting clip is tightened. Whole thing is little rusty and will require patience to remove ...the allen bolt is seized but has been 'lubed' and should be loosenable in the morning.

I'll need to wait until daylight strikes again. Might take it off tomorrow morn for an inspection. Bolts are going to take some working off though. You folks in England get terrible salt damage :(

I'm not replacing the indicator btw. It's added character:aidan

I'll let you know how I get on:thumb2

The upper mount bush and sleeve are available as replacement items and not too expensive.

Thanks Mike. Funny enough, I'm just trying to figure out if i can 'borrow' the one from my r850r useing fiches elsewhere online! If it fits, I'm going to transfer the part in the morning and order a replacement for the city hooligan machine...it's got a remus and it's LOUD. With the baffle out I can set off car alarms:hide

Either chop the bolt apart and get another,or temporarily get thee down to the car exhaust shop and splash ten bob on an exhaust clamp.

did you say you change the cat?
so you have a ypiece on? some of the aftermarket ones are a bit of a pain.
possibly the angle of the ypiece is pushing the silencer out of place.
see how you get on after taking it off and refitting.

HI Knuckles

That shroud thing that's at the lower end is the exhaust clamp too

BnQ sell wee lengths of steel tube in a couple of diameters (app 10mm, 16mm and 20mm) for a couple of YoYo's if you have to wait get one of them and chop as many spacers as ya want

You will still get a little movement on the bush

The trick is to set the exhaust up with the rear bolt loose and the front clamp ready to tighten
Then set the exhaust with a swing away from the wheel and nip up the clamp then tighten the rear bolt

it's amazing what difference half an inch of turn makes

Believe it or not, I used feeler guages on the r850r when I was fitting the remus and mid section on that. they worked great and I still have a bunch. I see where your coming from though. If I can get the spacers in and get the mid section aligned correctly, I'll be able to tighten the clamp and the whole thing will hold. then tighten the rear bolt. I recon I knocked it out of alignment when I knocked off the peg.

BTW the exhaust was not really loose it was just blowing the wrong direction. The vid is after about an hour trying to tighten the bolt on at the clamp and then took the whole cover and clamp unit off and got the camera... I recon I should be able to do this in an half hour. If all else fails, I'll get those mini stalks for the indicators.

Cheers all,

OOh, also, Colm, cheers for the Plusgas. That stuff is amazing:thumb It came in handy again today. WD 40 would take until tomorrow if lucky.

hallo,i too had play in my bush that holds the can to the footpeg bracket,2small washers, one each side of the bush.tightened again, its still rock solid 18months later.washers r small enough not to give bike a rough look to it,must be noted the play was minium.:)

I'm doing a change of fluids this weekend so I'll get back to you all...I might get some rubber washers and do a once over with the wrench. I'm hoping to get this sorted when I get up to go for work tomorrow... where are the damn gloves I bought for emergencies. I could be doing it now but I can't be bothered:hideN

It's a great bit of kit

done and it seems healthy again. I used .30 mm feeler guages and bent them using an anvil and hammer. I then tapped them into the gap between the collar and pipe. tightened it all up and :thumb BTW the feeler guages were scored so they were no use for valve clearances anyway.

feeler gauges :D You could be charged under the misuse of teaspoons act 1983 for doing that :augie Still if it worked it worked :thumb2
