An odd one here....thought i'd sling it out in case anyone has had the same before, and before i take it in to get Prestige to take a look.......

My indicators only work once per start-up.

All bulbs are ok and can be lit on demand with the alarm......

I can flick between left and right flashing ad-infinitum.......

The cancel switch cancels the flashing , both sides.....

but after that, nothing...no indicators......though again they will flash with the alarm.

I've also got a Rob Farmer switch......that doesn't work at all......the fogs don't light....

All fuses are ok, all relays and arcane yellow boxes in fuse box seem seated properly.........

My initial thought was the cancel switch itself...but why does it then work when I start up again??????

'03 adv btw.......

Any ideas leddies an' gents??

My first thought was a relay causing the problem, if I remember rightly Rob's kit comes with a relay. If Rob's kit not working at all I would disconnect it completely then check indicators etc.

Mind you I could be talking b******s

hmmm that crossed my mind Mick....relay sticking open or the coil not connecting properly......if Rob doesn't read this i'll PM him 'cos TBh i haven't a friggin clue which wire is which on what he did :D

Cheers

what you mean, I purchsed one of Rob's kits about 9 months ago and it is still lying here asking "when are you going to fit me".

To indicate or not that is the question....

Try going for the obvious (or not as the case may be) such as the actual indicator relay: connections to the unit first ...clean and tight fit. Tap the indicator unit lightly (index finger type tap) with the ignition on and the indicator switch (either) on. If the flasher can is sticking a tap normally makes work for a few seconds but its no cure. Some can be gently persuaded apart and you can clean the contacts but not always with success, you may have to replace with a new/different unit.

You might also have a wiring fault from the switch gear to the relay. Has this just suddenly happened or did you notice the flash rate getting slower. If the Hazard warning system functions then I would go for the flasher can then work out from there.

Poor earthing will cause a similar problem to the one you describe, try using a gash piece of wire to act as a temporary earth for the flasher relay.

Good luck...diagnosis at a distance is a bit like Tony Blair, you're never quite sure! :D

A bit like the Irish mechanic asked to test the indicators....

They're working !!

they're not !

:D

Myself and Stefan bought Rob's kit and took us an hour to fit his kit scratching out heads, swearing, thinking etc, took 5 mintues to do mine after that :)

Electrical stuff always seem more intimidating than mechanical stuff? Still have to fit the spot's though

A quick update......

I was really pissed off withthe fault last night 'cos i had the oppurtunity to ride for work today...two jobs, one shoeburyness, the other up near Gt Yarmouth, and neither needing more than a phillips screwdriver to do....

SO i got up early and went out intending to scrub connections and wiggle anything wigglable........but it worked.....first time.......no messing about......

push indicator...flash flash...cancel..stop flashing.....push other indicator....flash flash...engine on , same result.....10 mins of trying to duplicate fault and they were working perfickly.......

They stayed working all the way up past Yarmouth, and ll the way back until i got to Southend......then they packed in again.

I tried the hazards, and found that after cancelling the indicator and then being unable to activate it again, a quick flash on the hazards 'reset' the flasher and they will work for one more use.....but obvioulsy this is a pita and confusing for the cage drivers.

I stopped at Maplins and bought two identical relays to the ones fitted in Rob's garage...no difference.......i wiggled and pushed and tapped, no difference........

It can't be a physical connection problem surely.......as it resets electronically with innapropriate use of the hazards.......

I'm starting to think it must be the actual autoswitch, but I can't see why the hazard trick resets it.

Same prob with my indicators... work once after switching ignition on, but after using Indicator Cancel switch they never work again...

Also have Robs Switch.... Disconnected brown/white to ind. relay from auto switch (left all other wires in situ) and all works fine (except auto switch and aux lights of course).

Although after a few days I reconnected this wire and it all worked again....only for a couple of days????

When it failed again I used my test meter to check continuity of all connections and all were fine. but still no indicators or aux lights.

Don't think that it is the aux lights relay that was suggested early on, as my other Aux (main beam) lights work fine (not via an auto switch but on the same power feed and before other aux light relay).
Seems to be pointing towards the autoswitch. Only other observation was that it gets very hot inside the fuse box area after a long run...
Possible switch breaking down and giving a false earth due to heat or vibration????

Regards

Excellent.......thanks Taz....that sounds likely.......
Both days it's happened, it's been hot.......both times, i've been caning it andf for four hours or more........

Both times btw, i've also been running the fogs as running lights......they're pointed downwards so they're not offensive but they do make a big difference in response from cages..........

I think i'll take the fusebox apart this weekend if i can and stick a heatsink onto the autoswitch....i've got loads lying around from PC builds and upgrades.......i'll see if that makes a difference..

Cheers

Fanum.

Def think its heat related...
Had no problems in the colder months.

Same as you on hot days my indicators go west, I also use my fogs as running lights. But the Autoswitch is just a switch so should not be under load, thats what your relays are for.
After the ride home yesterday I quickly dismantled the fuse box, boy was it hot in there. Checked all connections but still no joy with indicators or aux lamps (FF50's). Disconected brown and white wire and indicators worked fine. Next day I reconnected this wire and all worked fine again???

Might think about a new position for the autoswitch i.e. up front inside the instrument binnacle (this is where my relays are for the Aux lights). As am getting fed up and broken finger nails every time I dismantle the fuse box....

I will let you know if its any better.

Sorry to say its the switch,

just ditch the switch,

At present sourcing replacement switches from Motorworks based on F650 handle bar aux switches, will report progress in due course.
