My new 2009 1200 GSA has no power

Are you actually a wind up 'cos you must have got a different 1200 GSA to me.
I can pull away at any gear from 1500 rpm
I have never yet been 'in the wrong gear that the engine cannot pull me out of the situation'.
Yes it does not have the 'ultimate' power of a big jap 4 cylinder.
If you want a sports bike then a GSA is not the one.
Likewise if you want an alrounder then no point getting a GSXR1000.
BMW can do better - err in what way - who else makes such a wide range of bikes - Suzuki do not, Kawasaki do not, yamaha - maybe.

I must admit - I did ! and now and on my second 1200 GSA
- I'll never change back to a ricer - and yes the engine does get better, (one of my first posts on the forum was along the lines of does it get better) a lot better, a wise man posted back to me regarding a gs -time is on your side
Plenty of power for what the bike is designed to do. If you don't like what it is designed to do don't blame the bike or BMW.

You obviously haven't been on a proper sportsbike for awhile, of course an exhaust will make it faster, don't you know Louder = Faster
, maybe a few anodized screen screws, and some carbon fibre thinger mejingies as well, it'll certainly shift then 
A GS is far removed from a sportsbike, sportsbike riders are obsessed with making their bikes as light as possible, GS riders are obsessed with making theirs as heavy (with loads of touratech tat) as possible.

I took mine to the 'Ring recently, on proper soft road rubber, and it was an absolute revelation. I was very, very far from the slowest person there, and on my last few laps, nothing came past at all, and I passed a score of 'Blades, ZX10s, and the like (although the cars were in another league).
The reason that I could do this is not that I'm a riding god, but that it is so easy to get right to the bike's limits consistently. It would happily get the pegs down, meaning that I could pass most things through the apex in the bends. As long as I was then willing to get on the power very early and hard, it needed an exceptionally long bit on full throttle afterwards for the litre sportsbikes to come back past.
I hadn't been expecting this, but came away massively impressed that the same bike that I'd had up over Mont Blanc the month before was able to not just match, but to beat plenty of much more focussed machinery on the track.
Yes, you'll be murdered in a straight line if you crack the throttle open from 70 against a Hayabusa, and the demands of a short track are not its best vebue either, but you just need to be aware of that in advance, and make sure that you're ringing its neck all the time, and you'll make great progress.
Ride it like you stole it, I think, is good advice to get the best from these.

Opps I must plead guilty to that as well, Your Honour, as both my last two 'New' purchases have had to be personally imported from Spain to Gib, and I've bought them on looks, write ups and gut feeling alone.I almost bought a new silver 1150GS many years ago which was in a showroom in Malaga, but as soon as I coped eyes on a green ZX12R A1 in a showroom in Marbella, well it was love at first sight and I bought it.
Six years later, I felt it was time for a change. I knew what I wanted and on seeing and sitting on a 08 1200GSA at the motorshow in London, my mind was made up.
Both of these bikes I have not been able to pre test, yet I've been happy with what I've got.
I must admit I would have liked to pre test ride the bikes prior to purchasing, but sometimes its not possible.

Slow? Is it? I find mine quite fast, with day to day riding. I've a red one, mind. These have 25bhp more redness than others......but do keep it to yourself. I fitted a full akropovic, minus the cat, power commander, K&N air filter, use 98RON and I found an extra 1.5bhp....well worth the investment, but nothing can beat redditity. It's worth an extra 23.5bhp.

Being a young whipper-snapper, dealers were reluctant to let me go out for a test ride. If I had not managed to take one out, I wouldn't have parted with 12k. Simples. But thats me.
I like all bikes, Trailies, sportsbikes, cruisers et al.
Committing to buy the GS i'd written off staying with my mates on sportsbikes on ride outs. Yeah, they blast past on the straights, but on the twisties, it leans toward the GS most of the time.
It's only my second bike, my first being a 650 Bandit, so performance wise it feels a lot faster than the Bandit.
I don't care if i'm not the fastest one in the pack, but i'm by far the most comfortable! Hope you find what most of us find in the GS!

He's right though. Spend wads of cash on a bike not test ridden, then find it's not right, not bright. Thinking of upgrading it for next year's model, less bright.

I do , KTM 690 SM , as I hadnt past my test. Great fun at slow speeds. R1200GS as wanted to commute 120miles and liked my 535d so liked the toys on the BMW. Thinking next that I want a K1300S as I like the 2D display and the looks , I also think with 175bhp it will have a certain go go go. I cant tell much in an hour test ride personally so tend to read reviews, forums and if I like it take the plunge if I can find the right deal.
