my new GS

hello to all, after finally making the plunge to a GS after countless years of enduros and converted CR 500s for road use, the day I picked up my 07 GS in March this year was a day to remember, the grin on my face over the last two months has just got wider and wider.

unfortunatley yesterday I had to return my GS to the dealer to have a new clutch fitted which is a little worrying.

Has anyone had this experiance with a bike this age or was i just unlucky?, any feed back would be greatly appreciated

What's the problem with the clutch?

There have been some issues with oil seal leaks either side of the gearbox. I think in general, once replaced you'd have to be very unlucky to experience it again.

Shouldn't happen, of course, and it must be really disappointing, but stick with it and it'll all be worthwhile, honest.

Sorry to hear that the ownership of your BMW has been tarnished!

I had similar issues not with a GS but I had a K1200GT (2005) model. I purchased it second hand at just under two years old with 3400 miles on the clock. Super bike until I started to have a bad clutch slip under full throttle. I spoke to the guy I bought it from and he said ah, it did exactly the same with me at two months old then again at 6 months old. It went back to BM and they 'fixed it'!!! or so he thought.

When I took it back to BM they could not find anything wrong but for me that was the end for me of what I had thought would be a great bike. I got rid of it and now ride a Triumph Tiger 955i, fantastic bike.

I have to say the BM customer service was excellent but the product just did not match up to it for me.

Hope it gets sorted and you can enjoy it again and put it out of your mind.

I'm exeperienced a bit of clutch slip on full throttle was a bit worried, (on my way to the TT) then it went and settled down. had a bit more of the same on mad sunday, can't understand how it is 'intermittent' will have it booked in for a look at - wonder if this is a common problem ?

I've had the same Doc, (Normally under load) spoke to dealer who said the following "Could be the black protector had moved near the clutch, and when travelling at speed just a slight movement would have the clutch slipping" !!

Sounded rubbish to me, but I checked and the protector had moved slightly (Prob when I dropped it the other week ) and so I repositioned it, and to date, no slip at all.

Was also told by the dealer that it's not rare for this to happen as the clutch on a GSA is like a tractors, and they rarely slip.

Anyway, it worked for me, so maybe worth a try.

exactly the same Doc, when you nail it the clutch slips. what i did find was it was only after you have been riding over a couple of hours and she was very hot.

when I took it to the dealer on Saturday it did not slip once.

I will let you know what they said later in the week

Don't know how many miles you have done, but check the clutch reservoir is not to full. As the clutch wears, the fluid fills the reservoir and if its over full can make the clutch slip. By removing some of the fluid, the clutch stops slipping. Worth checking, but if your taking it into the dealer under warranty, then just let them sort it out.

Doc, Maybe one for you to check the dealer has come back to me today and informed me the problem with the clutch was the brush gaurds pressing against the lever:
