Hi, guys.

newbie here today I,ve said hello and that so please be gentle, can I ask for a bit of help from you knowlegable guys .

I bought a 2010 1200gs adventure today in London area and when I picked it up it was showing 3/4 of a tank of fuel, so I cracked on down the M4 home to Cardiff just past Bath on the m4 in fast lane the bike ran out of fuel just managed to get into the hard shoulder.
bike was going fine and I thought it was fuel problem anyway 1 hour later RAC came with 10 litres of fuel put it in and bike started and ran ok. but the gauge didn,t move from 3/4 full when I left London and ran out neither did it move from 3/4 full when he added the 10 litres.
now I know these bikes have issues but I bought this bike today privately what do you think needs doing to bike.
do you think BMW will help I know it,s out of warranty.
any help please
thanks guys all the best.

First - use your trip meter, you're good for at least 360miles maybe more, but there are some long standing issues with fuel readings, your bike is fine, just dont rely on the computer read out.

faulty fuel level strip in the tank. common problem.

£200ish to fix i believe.

I also have a 2010 GS Adv that had fuel gauge/range issues

New fuel strip fitted under warranty and all appears ok at the moment

Wot he said. You're a silly Billy for not filling up immediately and just using the trip. Endless threads on here about dodgy fuel gauges / tank fuel strips. Forget it. Fill it. Zero trip. Ride it. Fill it. Repeat as necessary :-)

Save any repair costs and spend it on fuel.

Enjoy. Loads of good advise on here. For anything and everything.

What everyone says, trip meter is the kiddy.

But if it bothers you a lot try it on with BMW. Refer to here that its a common fault that should be sorted and it isn't good enough just because the previous owner couldn't be bothered to sort it.

It might help if you tie it in when you're going to the dealer to give them some other business, a service or some gear..

My 2010 30 Yr Anniversary had the same problem , it also had a slow running trip which made it even more difficult to estimate how much fuel was left . The fuel strip was to blame . I think it is back to a float now , though it's not a retro fit

Ditto. My 2011 RT's fuel gauge is pretty much hopeless.
BMW dealer's aren't interested even though it's still in warranty. I've learnt to live with it.

Don't all you ADV riders carry extra fuel in a wee can or placcy jerry? It's usually secured to a giant tin box at the back somewhere. :pullface

Open the tank and listen for fuel sloshing around. my 2010 GSA had a few liters trapped in the right side of the tank. I just tipped it up on the side stand to move the fuel over.

That's terrible!

I'd be virtually camping in their bloody showroom if they showed me that kinda attitude.

When you stop to consider how much these bikes cost!!! Leant to live with it. No way Pedro. :rob
