So what does it do / or not do that I was after?
Touch screen, usable with gloved hands is massive improvement
2GB CF card, so you can carry all of Europe on it, v9 mapping (last official covers every country in W & E Europe you'll visit in detail
More memory
Bigger screen
More customisation of screen and tabs
...........That's for starters
Only downside is no internal battery, so must by 12v vehicle powered or mains inside - hardly a biggy as you'd want it powered, instead of using the internal battery anyway

Apart from no full postcode (hardly a show stopper), it has no internal battery...................that's all
Hardwire in a 2610 and it surpasses a Quest in every way (I've had both)
Having o internal battery is a biggy for me though, used to take quest off the bike and track where I was walking or exploring... and then plan my next route via a pub or something before getting back on and setting off....
I'm getting the feeling that planning a route on these newer sat navs entails plugging into a Laptop... something I don't want to have to do.

The Zumo 379 looks interesting.. anyone experienced it?
Is it 5v or 12 that goes into the machine - ie can it be charged/run from an external 5v power pack?
Is it's satellite performance better than the Quest?
I presume the antenna is built in?
One aspect which I'm finding it hard to figure out is the route planner. Everything appears to say that you plan the route via connecting PC etc....
On the Quest, I had an option to plan a route from position to destination, and add addition destination (Via) by selecting from the map... can this not be done now with Garmin?s

Easily done with the Montana as you use the "Route Planner" application:

Yes, you can plot a route off the devices' screens and / or by using the devices in several other ways, for instance by drawing in a favourite or two.
Dont buy a garmin. They are the most crappy over rated pieces of shit ever made. I'm using one at the moment in Germany. Takes half an hour to make up its mind where its going, and tries desperately to get you on any motorway.
Set it for 'no major roads' and it almost takes you up folks garden paths.
Its shite, as every Garmin Iv'e ever had has been. My 50 quid tom tom could knock spots off it. Both my garmins are going on Gumtree as soon as I get back.

Please note that the poster has not given any details of what Garmin unit he is using, how long he has had it, how many miles he has ridden before trying the unit in Germany,whether the unit is on the latest software release.
My conclusion, which I hope is wrong, is that the poster assumed that the Garmin would work in exactly the same way as his beloved TomToms.
I shall be keeping an eye on Gumtree for a cracking "shit Garmin" bargain.
it's what you get used, I love my Garmins, and the quirky routes it takes me on occasions, without them it would have just kept me on the boring main roads and missed out some amazing roads and hidden jems

I found it difficult to keep the Map folded in the right position at 60mph
As for Hiking etc, still use my trusty Map and compass, just don't always have them with me when I stop off somewhere.
There is a long discussion over on ADVRider as to whether the iPhone 6+ will render the dedicated SatNav obsolete.
Folks want to use Google maps for route planning, hate the Garmin software and object to the price Garmin charge for their bike products. Would anybody recommend the OP to buy an iPhone or Android phone for the job?
