Not wanting to push my kids into biking but being open to their interest yesterday Sam, my fourteen year old son, am I went shopping for some biking gear which we’ve done on a couple of occasions over the last twelve months. The scenario goes like this; Sam expresses interest in going on the bike so off we trot to Hein Gericke etc. Sam tries on a load of gear and I then say “ok now we’ve had a look let’s come back again”, he then says “ok” and we return home. My idea being that if he’s not fussed about getting any gear then he’s not that interested and I really only want him to come out with me because of his interest not to please me.

Anyway this trip to the shops was different, at the point I made for the exit he made a real point of not wanting to go without getting some kit so he left kitted out and happy. Last night Sam and I ventured out to see a local rock covers band, Della and the Fellas if you’re interested, and the weather was foul, howling a gale and pouring with rain so it didn’t look like today was going to be an ideal first trip on the bike but this morning the weather was glorious so we got kitted up and headed off for a bit of a run.

First stop, after around ten miles was Broxton Café to make sure all was well and Sam’s broad smile assured me that it was. We had a brew and a bacon bap then headed of to Chester where I had a couple of chores Sam was over the moon with the ride so I called into Charlie Williams emporium to purchase an Autocom headset for Sam’s new lid, which I fitted this afternoon after our return. We then continued via Buckley to the Horseshoe Pass where a kindly traffic cop indicated left to suggest we passed him, see they’re not all unreasonable in North Wales, we carried on via Llangollen, Overton, Whitchurch and Audlem arriving home exactly one hundred miles after we kicked off.

And Sam’s first words after arriving back at home “Dad can we go camping next time”. I’m guessing he enjoyed himself.

Nice one, :thumb2 Had a few great trips around the Alps with my son and daughter when they were about Sams age.

But not at the same time. :D

Good for you fella !!, I did more or less the same ride for my lads first run 2 years ago when he was 12. Unfortunatley for him it was on the back of my R1 but it still didn't put him off.

Get my GS as the end of the month so it should make things a bit more pleasurable for both of us.

:clap Through the site ive picked up some bargain like new bike gear for my 12 year old daughter. All thats left is to get into a bike shop and try some crash helmets on and were all set for a bimble. Thats assuming she can bear to part from her boyfriend for 10 mins:rolleyes:

Some good roads there, no wonder he enjoyed himself.

12 years old with a boyfriend?
I hope you were polishing your shotgun* when you met him.

*This is not a euphemism BTW.

Nice one Dave :thumb2
It's great when they take an interest. But as Proff says 'watch out'. My 14y.o. took such a shine to my 250 Beta that I had to buy him his own trials bike to get mine back
And he's a Sam too ;)

he then says “ok” and we return home
They all do that Sir :blast Feckin' teenagers :rob

Yes Dellis, a great introduction to biking, fair play to you.....
Seeing the lad in the correct gear is brilliant.
Unfortunately I didn't have such a father/mother relationship when younger and learnt many a bad habit from a young age.......very foolish indeed.:augie
Another two years and he'll be after a nifty-fifty cc and then he'll be hooked....:thumb2

Oh, and that copper letting you pass will be so he can see your numberplate size and listen for a race silencer.........:P

Best of luck to the lad.

Timpo.
