I've just finished a fantastic tour of South America on my 06 GSA 1200. 7000 miles, 6 countries, in 6 weeks.
Flew the bikes (my GSA and mates TDM) into Buenos Aires and headed south through Argintina, then Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Columbia. Apart from dealing with the ludicrous border requirements between each country and the total lack of road discipline; it was truly amazing trip with some beautiful roads, awe inspiring scenery and the uninhibited friendliness of the people
The bike performed faultlessly. Despite some of the worst roads I've ever riden and much of it (Southern Bolivia, lots of Peru) on unpaved roads. The bike was really put through its paces and got a lot of abuse as well as demanding high miles every day. It preformed extraordinary well; never missed a beat. Engine was sweet as nut no matter how long or high I rode (up to 4800 mts) or how crappy the petrol was. I was by far it's weakest component which caused me to drop it a couple of times in the thick sand covered roads of Bolivia. So how much maintenance did this bike need during the trip? Checked the oil every few days; didn't need a drop. Only thing to go wrong.... had to change headlight bulb!
It is an amazing bike and I was very pleased it was the my choice for this amazing trip
I'll raise a glass to the GSA
I highly recommend doing South America by bike and happy to advise on the planning

Your tour sounds great. I've been toying with the idea of a trip like that for a few years, debating whether to go on an organised tour, fly and rent or bring own bike. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated

I'd be interested to hear about your visa requirements for these countries as looking to add these to my RTW trip later in the year.

Edit: now see there are none. Marvellous.
