yes believe it or not yesterday while driving back from a 7hr cruise in southern Belgium my top box (bmw vario) just flew off and landed (rather successfully) on the pavement on the top scraping the back support and some plastic parts (see pic). I was doing about 70km/h and there was no bumps or weird movement to trigger the fall. After some scrambling i managed to pull the box out of danger and install it back on the back of the bike - there was no sign of any structural connection damage etc and the box did not open upon impact...i checked the weight at home and it was loaded 4kg so not a max. It was secured in the morning and held fine for all day long (various roads).

anyone else with this mishap? is there a way to strengthen the top box connection on the LC model (2015). I have to say I am a little unsure about long trips now with the vario set...

thanks

I suspect the vario box was not secure correctly. You have to really make sure!

Yup, mine fell off a couple of months ago - I simply didn't attach it correctly.

First time in years of using BMW luggage.

My friend Jockser noticed after a 100km ride that his vario topbox was missing, so we doubled back to the town of Kars (in far eastern Turkey) where we had set off from that morning in search of the box.
Sadly we didn't find it which was particularly disappointing for Jochen as the topbox contained a brand new laptop which was lost and gone forever.

:(

I know of one person who lost a Varioa top box, and one person who found one (not the same one)... so sounds like they do come off quite often??
Can't see how... have tried with mine but its solid?.. I always close my handle and lock it so it can't come off or even people have a go at taking it?...

Was yours locked?

Yes this happened to a mate and the three of us who were following managed to avoid it as it bounced down the road. Quite amusing at the time.

And he thinks the laptop will come in handy.:augie

The locking mechanism is very solid and firm. I think you might have lock it improperly.

Happened to a mate with a previous (non LC) Vario top box and he still swears it was attached correctly ....
