I had a look through some "anchor" threads on here, which were quite helpful, most notably Bear's job. Some of the threads I found were from 2007, 2005, 2003... So I'm looking for fresh advice.

Y-Anchor website suggests 450mm x 450mm hole, 500mm deep. That seems fucking HUGE, no? Bear's hole didn't look that big...

It's going into a tarmac driveway. What material might I expect to find under the tarmac (gonna cut a neat rectangle with a 9" grinder)? Loose (easily removed) hardcore? Or something solid? I have a big rotary hammer drill that I've used to break concrete before, but it's a pain in the clack.

Is there more trust of postcrete and rapid-set concrete these days?

I want to do this job in as short a time as possible, so postcrete would be ideal.

I used postcrete when I made this in early 2015 to provide a solid base in which to fix galvanised steel post-feet, and it's still standing, so it can be very solid & strong stuff (don't be too critical - I'm handy/DIY, rather than professional):

Can't specifically help you but I think the size is basically so you have this big heavy chunk of concrete. Nearly half a cubic meter of concrete is going to be a fair deterrent.

If your drive is done properly it should have a fair thickness of hard packed hardcore.

Everyone here finds my threads useful. Everyone :)

When digging out try and slope the sides outwards like a bell shape so that the new concrete goes outwards under the existing surface, and perhaps lay a few metal rebar rods across the mix to reinforce it all, though not essential. I just mixed my own concrete using bags of ballast and sand, cement from BnQ. It doesn't take long to mix as its only a small amount.

That'll be where you keep your dags and hoss?

I'm gonna make the hole 60cm (24") long x 40cm (16") wide x 40cm (16") deep. According to this volume-calculator, that's .096m3 - only a tenth of a cubic metre.

My local DIY guy says two 20kg bags of Postcrete should be enough, but I'll buy 5 bags and return what I don't use. Does two 20kg bags seem less than enough to anyone else?

I picked up some galvanised steel threaded rod - I'll chop that up and stick some spikes into the earth to give the concrete a good grab.

Waiting for a weather-window now.

My new-to-me GS has been in a mate's lock-up since I got it two weeks ago, and my new riding gear arrived last week. Keen to get this shit sorted.

I think the Grizzly one meant nearly half a metre cubed rather than half a cubic metre! Your calculation is correct :rob

Job done. By fuck am I unfit. Muscles cramping, can't catch my breath, chest pounding, head thumping.

9" grinder to cut the 600mm x 400mm rectangle, hammer drill to break up the tarmac (4"-5"), packed hardcore (6"-8"), and a few inches of earth. ~400mm deep. Gravel under the anchor, four 500mm lengths of 12mm galvanised threaded rod hammered into the earth to give the lump of concrete a grab into the earth.

Anyway, very happy with it, even the finished surface, particularly as I was told it's hard to get a decent finish with Postcrete, and my driveway is on a slight hill. But I managed to finish it off pretty flush. Pretty happy that I got a good mix.

No pics of work in progress, as I was very much flying under the radar and needed to get it done fast.

My Abus Granit Extreme chain will have to do for now, but there's a Pragmasis 19mm beast on the horizon. :thumb

Do you need to seal the Tarmac where is buts up to the concrete, just saying as I've seen this done elsewhere, perhaps some sort of bitumen paint would do the trick or get a block of solid bitumen from someone doing roadworks and melt it in an old pot. It might be a bit OTT though, perhaps only applicable to high traffic areas.
