Nackered in Nancy

On way back from Vosges Mountains on 2000 1150 GS. Stopped for coffee. Watch oil piss out of final and leave puddle. No preceding vibration or roughness. Nearest BMW dealer just 4 miles away. Tiptoe there and leave bike pending inspection tomorrow morning. Chances of getting away with just bearing & seal change ???
Now ...tell me more about bikes with drive chains...

How many miles ? The bike is 17 years old mind you

How's that new Ducati of yours?

I'm sure I saw it earlier this week on a recovery trailer behind an AA Van going to Shipley

:)

Yes indeed it managed a slight problem with the rear sprocket, i suppose a final drive problem, but 40 quids worth of parts under warranty has fixed it. Thats the beauty of chains :D

Not to mention that everyone knows Ducati thoroughbreds are fragile :D but 5500 miles in 3 months and it isn't doing too badly !

The best thing about 11xx, is the more spares carried,is directly equal to to less failures.
Most spares sold on here have done more miles than they could achieve in service

I can vouch for that i have 60k kilometers on new in the bag FD bearing and seal, a spare HES and clutch cable :beerjug:

So I enjoyed Nancy the other night but in the morning she charged me a lot of money then sent me on my way. The whole experience was vaguely familiar.
€311 all in. Good? Bad? Doesn't matter - it's what I had to pay. I assume it's like having your appendix out - you don't expect to experience it twice in a lifetime. The bike has got 55,000 on the clock. We bonded again on the return trip. My mate had gone on ahead as we didn't know how long things would take. Funny thing is his 2002 Africa Twin had been leaving a slug like trail of oil and coolant all round the Benelux countries but still made it home. Whole trip dry as a bone but as usual greeted by solid rain from Folkestone to home.
Do I need a bike that is young enough to get repatriation insurance?
Nah..she good to go now. She's just had a rub down with an oily rag.
Next year the Red Bull ring for another round of LMP3 racing to enjoy with 360 Racing.

You got a bargain there - only €300-odd inc parts for a diff job on an aged shaft-drive bike is more than kushtie.
Your 'ride-report' was a breath of fresh air on biking forums of all kinds. And I should know.....
Regards from sunny Andalucía,
