Naples - Walking Distance to Pompeii

Anyone got recommendations for B&B/Hotel in Naples, secure parking for my little 1250GS and walking distance to Pompeii. Just putting a trip togther but struggling to find anything that seems appropriate. It all seems to be apartments!

I've stayed here, but it was for work and I had a hire car, it's about 5KM walk to the historic area, but it's a nice location and sensibly priced for where it is

It's 24km to walk from the Ibis Styles in the centre of Naples to Pompeii ruins.

What is the max distance for you to walk to Pompeii?

There is a a train service that was very cheap when I stayed near San Agnello di Sorrento. It circumnavigates Vesuvius and stops at Pompeii. I used my hire car to get to Pompeii and the train to get to Naples museum that has many of the Pompeii artefacts. The really nice B&B does not seem to be in business now.

As for hotels, when are you going? I have trips in May & Sept/Oct next year and I have noticed many hotels are not showing availability. Not unusual. Many places are in their rest period before the winter season over the school holidays. Many will not set their post Easter 2026 rates, let alone release rooms to the booking sites, until this season ends and they review their margins.

Same reason Naples is built on a super volcano caldera...Which is twitching chaotically at the moment.

And the same train will take you to Herculaneum. A much better destination imho. More compact - a big consideration in the summer - and tends to be much less crowded than Pompeii.

Having read about Naples, we stayed in Salerno; parked the bike in the courtyard of an Airbnb and used public transport which is cheap and plentiful.

Did that last month, but didn't have to consider the complexity of a bike and so have no advice - but did see quite a few large bikes in the city.

Same train Naples-Pompeii, goes on to Sorrento but it's a bit of an extra drag, for not much reward (I felt). Had a nice lunch on the main square after walking-up an appetite at Pompeii.

and the advantage that Salerno is close to the very interesting Archaeological Park of Paestum

I went in January as I had a spare 2 weeks between changing employer. Fly drive with BA/Sixt. Everywhere apart from the centre of Naples was very quiet. T shirt weather much of the time and just me and the wild dogs in the Pompeii amphitheatre where Pink Floyd played.

We had one cold morning where it had snowed on Vesuvius which was a great sight. Went for breakfast meaning to take a picture afterwards but by 10am the snow had melted. This was before I had a phone with camera. Nokia 3210 time.

My advice re Pompeii is to get there just as they open. We did and all my photos have no other people in them, just the ruins. It makes it look far more atmospheric without gurning selfie-takers everywhere. And as others have said, Herculaneum is even better.

Joined a group with an local Italian guide whose English was superb
Bluetooth audio, covered all the important bits
Pompeii Scavi station on the local train system drops you right by the smaller entrance, Porta Marina, as we travelled from Sorrento

Runs between Naples and Sorrento
Also stops at Herculaneum

Entrance yards from the station was quieter as the main coach parties were going in the big main entrance lower down on the main road
Big site, well worth the guided tour cost
Really glad I visited the site

Get there early....just got busier as the day went on

I dont mind a walk of 5k. I rather not stop in Naples itself, outskirts or small village. I take a look at the train suggestion. Thanks
