You can repourpose an old PC with Freenas

SSD's generally are not the best for a NAS, but things may have changed

I use a Synology 2 bay NAS with two 1TB drives - sits virtually unused in the loft

inital outlay was high ish, about £300 max many years ago and then .... nothing

My bro is 'donating' a Sinology 2 bay .... apparently the 'go to' back when? He's not used his for about 8 years.

I suppose its all cloud stuff now ....

On the contrary, that's the whole point of a nas. If all other options fail, you have a hard copy backup
