Nasty little infection...

My laptop, not me!

Despite AVG, Windows Defender and Commodo Firewall and strict rules to the missus about clicking on attachments something's managed to sneak in. It's preventing me updating my virus software and preventing me going on to any website through either Firefox or Explorer. Whatever I type into my address bar stays in the address bar and after a few seconds of activity the page says 'done' but is just a blank white page. If I'm quick I notice it logging onto and exchanging information with various named pages in the bottom left of the screen - it appears to be a different page for each time I boot up.

Obviously, this is very frustrating 'cos I can't view any web pages! My home page is still the same as it was. I've scanned everything and nothing has come up. I've also downloaded adaware and spybot as well as a new version of AVG and AVG's new free spyware and rootkit stuff from work, installed and ran those last night and still nothing. Also tried running virus and spyware scans in safe mode and that hasn't helped either.

Any ideas? Any help very gratefully recieved.

Cheers (typed from work and currently, can only be read at work!):spitfire

Eyup Larry.....long time no see!

Sounds like you need to run 'Hijack this' to establish what's taken over your browser.

It's a serious little prog that produces a report that people here, or on the hijack this forum, will be able to interpret and tell you exactly what to do......or you can go through it yourself and googe anything you don't know and you'll probably find a removal tool for the nasty you've got.

For the mean time though, try starting your PC in safe mode (press f8 as it starts) and see if you can get access to t'internet.....or do it at work ......get firefox (stick it on a thumb drive from work and take it home if you can't do it there) and install it.

I's very very likely the thing thats got you is infecting I.E, so a new browser might get around it..Firefox is better anyway so no big loss if you have to lose I.E ;)

Oh, and tell your wife to damn well stop lookng at 'greasedupfiremen.com' by the way :D

Post back if you have probs

Hi Fanum,

Cheers for that. Have been running Firefox pretty exclusively now for a while but this has infected that and IE. Will try and produce a HijackThis log and post back on Monday if I can. Will also see if I can get online in safe mode.

Cheers

Try 'Opera' maybe?

Not used it meself, but others rate it :nenau

In the mean time, back up the laptop as much as you can.......if it's not got too much stuff on it, the easiest way of dealing with the situation might just be to re-install Windoze on a freshly formatted disk :)

Think I might have sussed this...Skip to the end of the first logfile if you don't want to read all the weird numbers and letters below.

On the report that pops up with HijackThis I noticed some suspect looking programs that reportedly could change where your browser wonders off to. Tried to copy the names and post them here but the backup box won't let me. Anyhow, there were three of them which I removed and now everything seems cushty. This is the logfile post removing the dodgy programs:

So, problem seemingly solved for now unless anyone can see otherwise. Thanks for all the help and advice and I'll be back posting soon

(from my own computer:thumb )

There's still a 'dodgy' item on the list which needs removing :-

O8 - Extra context menu item: Search with Wanadoo - res://C:\PROGRA~1\Wanadoo\WSBar\WSBar.dll/VSearch.htm

........and if that's the free version of AVG, get your credit card out and get something decent like Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite. When it's free you get what you pay for. The Windows firewall isn't worth a row of beans because it won't stop changed (infected / hijacked) programs talking outwards to the internet and giving away all your passwords and personal data - ZA will.

And while we're at it, just in case, change your Paypal / internet banking / email passwords and get a thrid party antivirus / spyware scan - try Kaspersky. Now wouldn't be too soon. Hope this helps, and good luck.

I guess many of us have our tried and tested favourite anti malware programs, and some (like me ) attempt to get them either free or cheaply.

For example, I bought a wifi router not just because I have 2 or 3 computers in use here at times, but also because it has an inbuilt hardware firewall, something common to most all of them. On top of this I use AVG free antivirus, spybot S&D anti spy/malware (free) and I periodically run an online check with Trend microhouse's free utility and HiJackThis.

If I were to actually pay for a package, I'd probably opt for NOD32 or the paid for version of AVG.

Many thanks for all of that help.

Will get rid of the mentioned item. I do run AVG free which has been good so far. That is with a wireless router as well as a firewall (not Windows) and Windows Defender as well as occasionally running a quick scan with other spyware. CCleaner gets run every few days as well. All been good so far until now but always try and be vigilant and look out for new better stuff.

Anytime I ran paid for protection it just seemed to let loads in and slow my system down - and some of it hangs around forever. I still have Symantec bits and bobs despite running the Norton complete removal program off their website.

Anyhow, it's all still working and hopefully will continue to do so until next time!
