just got in from a little ride and was parking the bike and it started making a crazy screeching noise. i thought it sounded it sounded like it was the clutch or the starter the starter trying to engage, i gave the starter a little press just to compare the sound and it seams to be the same. any ideas? i cant see why it would be engaging on its own. its not there all the time but sounds very nasty.

Solenoids have a habit of sticking, so it could be that, BUT as soon as ignition was switched on starter would engage.
It is possibly a broken bendix on the starter thats not returning fully
Take it off and give it a good clean and lube ...

Yup, mine dids a similar noise. At first very occasionally and I could.nt find the cause, Eventually the starter packed in. onbe of the magnets had come adrift. look on here for advice about rebuilding one for a lot less than a new one. 
a worn / bent clutch pushrod or knackered bearing on the pushrod makes a similar noise too...

It would help if the poster said where the noise was coming from. As it is all we know is it's a noise, from his bike.
We also have to guess if this noise is continous and if it happens with the ignition on or off.
I love a suspense story.
