Got the update disk and unlocked it onto the laptop ok. But going around in circles trying to get the unlocked maps onto the GPS

I thought it had downloaded the maps as it was downloading information for over an hour. But, it's not visible in the menu - settings - map - detail maps. POI loader can't load the maps as it says there's insufficient space :spitfire

So I guess the v9 maps are there, but I can't delete them or whatever is clogging up the GPS's memory. Tried re-running the update disk but it doesn't want to play :tears Any ideas, that will be helpfull :nenau

After a nights reflection I guess the question is how to bypass the download maps and unlock them, and go straight to update the GPS as this process should get rid of v9 or bad v10 mapping?

Hi, not sure what a nav3 is so has it just got internal memory or can you put a flash card in it? and have you been given an unlock code from Garmin for the update disk?

Nav 3 = BMW 2820 without MP3 play facility but has a compass rose facility. Internal memory and have unlocked the maps on the laptop. Can get maps to the GPS via POI loader, but not the complete v10 set as the GPS says there isn't sufficient room :(

Is there any way of browsing the files in the unit to back up the unit?

Not that I know of. I know the 2820 allows you to see the GPS as an external drive, nothing shows on the laptop, and I've not been able to find how to review the space used on the GPS. There is a page which lets you see the detail maps installed, but doesn't give details of the space used by them.

Call Garmin in any case. While doing so, check that you do not need a BMW specific disk to get the latest version of the dealer database etc.
The 2820 lets you see the unit as an external drive in order to able to control the music files.

Spoken with them a couple of times. First idea was to do a hard reset to clear the useable memory. For those interested it's MENU + MAP + POWER. This takes it back to Kansas, but didin't remove the mapping :( or :) depending what you're after.

Further discussion with them is that the update disk itself might be corrupted as very early on you're asked to switch on the GPS and connect it to the PC. At this point the updater should ask if you want to update the GPS or the PC. I've never had this option.

I'll be calling them back later when I have the GPS and PC together.

My PC doesn't show the GPS as an external drive BTW so I can't "see" what's happening in its memory, the joys of a Nav 3 :o

John could be faulty disk, as i type this mine is updating, firstly it updated the mapping software and then it erased some stuff and now its working out which bits of maps it needs to update but it is taking forever.

All worked, according to the GPS details enabled maps are BMW Motorad and 2008 NT. It took best part of 2 hours in all but all is fine GPS just has find itself again i.e back the UK. :thumb2

When you got to the part very early on where it asked you to switch on the GPS and plug in the USB lead, did it give an option to update the GPS only or update the PC only, or something like that?

Hi John,

My 2820 update has just finished. It loads the maps onto the PC first. Then, after connecting GPS via USB (no choices here or anything) it went into webupdater to load latest firmware for the unit and Traffic options. After that we went straight into myGarmin to pick up the unlock code. Then it erases the exisiting maps on the unit and builds up a new map image, which took 90 minutes or so.

I was fearing the worst after reading the posts on this forum about folk who got their undergarments in a twist over this process.

I've put the 2820 into file mode to confrim that there is only one map image on the machine. I have previously removed all the unwanted voices to give more space for music files.

I do regret that you're having a hard time on this one.

Regards,

John.

PS. I do seem to have BMW-specific version of the old version 9 maps in my possession - surely you should have a BMW-specific Europe 2008. I have just upgraded from V8 to 2008.

It must be you John I would suggest an uninstall of what 2008NT has been loaded on your pc and then start again from fresh..
