Nav 3 and CN EU 2008

Just spoken with the Garmin helpdesk guys and it seems that they shouldn't have sent out CN 2008 disks to BM Nav 3 owners. There is a specific BM 2008 disk. There is in existence some of the BM 2008 disks, but not for general release. They hope to have a fix by the end of the week and apparently I'm not the only one who is having difficulties.

Anybody want to buy a CN EU 2008 update disk :augie

But surely they're free from Garmin :nenau and require you to pay for the unlock as you install.

Having said that I still haven't got mine despite requesting one, not desperate enough to pay though.

Me thinks thats bull***t I have a Nav 3 and have had no problems at all updating and the disk sent mentions nothing about being BMW specific, in fact on the front advises update disk for Streetpilot c-series, i-series, 2720, 7200 7500 and quest 2.

The only question is have you done the firmwave upgrade to the Nav 3 plus version?

And that's what I was told may be the problem for some, they've had 5 problem reports so far.

Already had 4.40 and it checks for updates on the 2008 DVD.

There may be a degree of truth in this.

When I go onto the Garmin site and ask for map updates being available for my Nav III device, it has always said (for at least the past two months) that there will be no update disks available before June 2008.

I am not sure what the specific differences (if any) are between Europe 2008 and BuMW Europe 2008 maps, other than the BuMW mapping is NT. It cannot, surely, be the BuMW dealers listing as these load completely separately?

Either all the above is correct, or John Armstrong is simply unlucky or doing something wrong.

That being said, I can't see much point in cocking around with maps that do not load after an hour plus and / or wipe the current maps off (another hour I guess to reload?) and / or nobody has come up with a way or suggestions to help Herr Armstrong.

May as well wait for BuMW dealers to start lobbing the updates around, I guess.

The problem for Garmin is that they've taken my $88 and for the unlock code which they suspect isn't 100% compatible :o

Luckly I'm not going to an area where there are serious changes and is a long way from home eg Croatia and the spare 400 odd mb of space left after a normal map download isn't enough :(

Going up to the border area of :oonyack next month, new panniers permitting, so can fit the whole of the UK plus a bit on the above mentioned "free" space :)

Latest update, they'd like the unit to have a play with :D

At least it should come back with CN EU 2008 BMW inside it :)

Just wondered if this was ever sorted at all or if there is an update to 2008 (v10) available for the Nav III.

Did you get it sorted John? As I have just come back from atrip I can now advise that although mine seemed to update with no problems at all, there does seem to be some difference between the maps on the unit and the pc :nenau lots of recalculating on the ground as it where.

Will call Garmin during the week and see if its f**ked up., :blast

I have spent the last week trying to sort this out and have spoken with various people at Garmin, all with different ideas/suggestions, none of which have worked.

The final straw was yeaterday afternoon, after having been on the phone for over half an hour, the chap at Garmin admitted that there simply is not enough memory on the Nav III for the whole of Europe. This is because there is not the same functionality as the 2820 to switch to an external drive and some of the original software cannot be overwritten. While the update is useful because it has recent road changes etc it cannot update the whole of Europe, making it pretty redundant if you want to do a long trip - a fact I pointed out in no uncertain terms.

I feel as though I have been ripped off by Garmin, paying for an update that does not actually do what it says on the tin.

I am going to the Motorshow tomorrow and will be venting my spleen at the Garmin stand accordingly.

Will be interesting to see how you progress Chas, I too have started to have problems since the updated was installed which I never had when the unit was in its factory form.

Well, according to the very helpful chap at the Garmin stand this morning (doors opened 10.00 - my visit 10.01) there is a specific disc for the Nav III that is supplied by BMW and NOT Garmin.

Strange, says I, you still supplied the disc to me and let me unlock it even though it was the wring disc?

Errr, umm, errr, yes we have had quite a lot of complaints from BMW owners, sorry.

Anyway - I did then get very tempted by the micro SD card that slots into my Nokia N95 with full Europe mapping and full Garmin functionality.

Below the belt I think to have all those toys on display to distract me when I was attempting to rant. Luckily the associated shop (which is offering a £15 discount at the show) had none left in stock, only the UK and Ireland cards.

Ho hum, off to Cannon BMW to enquire about the correct disc.

i know its an old thread but has anyone actually updated there Nav 111 using the download service from garmin, i spoke to BMW and they tell me they only have the same version i already have, they are not sure when they will get the update discs and i see on garmins site i can get latest mapping as a download

I have. I purchased the lifetime maps option for £99. The download takes bleeding hours though. I have only loaded France and the UK onto my Nav III though so I don't know if the gremlins reported earlier (by me and others) have been fixed by Garmin.
