Nav 3 Not Speaking

Has anyone experienced a problem with their Navagator 3 not making any noise at all?

I have just purchased a brand new unit and it make no noise at all, not even a beep when the keys are pressed.

Checked the usual mute, volume and audio settings, nothing wrong there.

Any ideas before i return the unit?

ps having down loaded the 2820 manual and compared it to the BMW product, save for the extra cradle you get with the BMW gear my thoughts are the 2820 is a better unit.

How are you "listening" to it? I'm asking as initially I could get nothing but a high pitched buzz from my Nav 11 when I connected it to my autocom but I then found it required a mono jack lead and I was using a stereo one.

I know the Nav 111 has bluetooth but thought I'd ask.

I have a 2610. on the power lead there is an extra audio lead attached. A small jack plug connects it to the autocom. I found the fitting to be dodgy on mine and had to wiggle it about a bit to get it to speak to me. Also some autocoms have multi auxiliary sockets. It may be that they are prioritised and you have the priority the wrong way round?

How are you "listening" to it?

Thunder's question is a good one... can you provide us with more details about how you are attempting to get the sound out of it?

I'm not sure if the Nav III comes with a car connector (a cigar lighter power plug that has a speaker built into the end of it), but if it does, try connecting this to it and see if it makes any sound when you use it in a car.

There is a 'mute' function on the GPSR, but I believe it resets to normal operation - in other words, the mute function is cancelled - whenever you cycle the power on and off.

Lastly - perhaps try pressing and holding the SPEAK button, then selecting 'advanced' from the menu - see if all the sound settings there look normal.

It is very rare for any GPSR to encounter a mechanical (electronic) failure, for that reason, I think you will have most success if you focus your troubleshooting efforts on 1) trying two different power cords, and; 2) checking the audio settings.

PS while I'm here is it true the Nav 111 does not have the MP3 function of the 2820?

If so do you know if it's just a case of the function being disabled or is it missing altogether.

This has been covered in another thread. The function is missing and cannot be added. The Nav III knows that it is not meant to have MP3 so will not accept the software. Just as the 2820 knows that it is not meant to work in the BMW cradle with the extra buttons or have the compass feature of the Nav III.

There is also a physical difference between the BMW Nav III and the 2820: The 2820 has two mini-phono jacks on the left side of the unit... I don't believe that the BMW Nav III has these.

I won. Thank you all for your replies but i think, to my embarrasment, I have found the root cause of the problem - me.

I connected the unit up in the car and expected it to perform like any other Nav unit i have used. I did not reliase that the Nav 3 does not have a built in speaker and therefore has no way of communicating with you unless you connect directly into the unit.

I now realise iImust plug in a head set or connect via bluetooth to hear the instructions and tones.

It could be said I am a fiddler rather than a reader of manuals but the manual that comes with the Nav 3 is, er rather short and rather rubbish. It does not tell you that there is not a speaker and that to hear instructions you must connect.

Further, the Nav 3 does not have the audio jack that the 2820 has on the body of the unit. The audio jack is on the BMW bike mount. This means that you can not use the unit in a car without a bluetooth headset (or without removing the bike mount from the bike and taking it with you), if you want to recive turn by turn instructions.

Its a bit of a non problem for me as I have nav in all my cars and tom tom navigator on my pda but for soemone who is buying to use in a car as well - be aware.

I maintain that the only user benefit I can identify with the Nav 3 over the 2820 is the BMW mount. The unit itself does not seem to be as well featured as the 2820.

Not actually true, you need the Car Power Speaker cable. See the attached thread .....

Thanks for the reply, that cable looks just the job for the car. I will try finding one.

I have now have a need to find a suitable bluetooth piece of kit that will satisfy my needs.

I want to connect my phone to the GPS (got this covered)

I want to connect the GPS to a bluetooth reciever in the form of a headset or Helmet.

I want full connectivity to my pillion, like an intercom.

It apears the System 5 does most of the above but I am not keen on the style and the Dainese Product does not offer connectivity to the GPS from what I have read so far.

This brings me to bluetooth headsets that I can either retro fit into a lid or wear as a seperate headset. I cant seem to find one that does all I would like.

Autocom is an option but I would really like to be wireless, unit to me and pillion to me.

The new Schuberth Bluesonic -http://www.schuberth.de/bluesonic/index.htm - unit looks very interesting but I dont think it is available on the market yet and Im not sure but I dont think it is going to be retrofitable.

I will keep searching.
