Hi guys.

Decided weather to keep my Tom Tom Rider 420 or sell it and get the Nav 6 for my new 1250. But all I keep reading is how buggy the Nav 6 is, especially when used with the TFT. Anyone got anything good to say about it? I like that the Nav 6 is all integrated, but will stay with my Tom Tom if its a rubbish sat nav!

Cheers:beerjug:

I quite like it.
I do not use the BT part, but the ability to zoom in/out by using the handlebar wheel is what makes it stand out in my book. I also like that it may be locked to the bike by using the stock BMW key.

Besides, I don't put old stuff on a new bike, but that's me..

+1 for the above. I’ve got one and so far it’s been good. I use mine with a sena10u and klim krios lid, it’s taking a lot of faffing to get it all to integrate but after following some tips on here I’ve just about got it. The only thing I cant sort is phonebook entries to the TFT.

Cheers guys. Does the Nav 6 not feel like old tech now though? It's been out a while, and no sign of its replacement?

the Nav6 looks ok and is still relatively modern - the Nav5 is out of support.

I don't know why you would consider the tomtom over an integrated piece of kit like the Nav6

Because BMW lock the manufacturer to certain specs the functionality of the devices are hugely strangulated.
The Nav’s are based on Garmin hardware but lack the huge updates that the direct Garmin kit gets.
The integration however makes it a difficult split.

The Nav V still has updateable maps and the only real difference for the money is a brighter screen.

it gets map updates and it should receive things like GPS time updates, but it isn't supported anymore - that is to say, there will be no more revisions to the operating system / firmware. There haven't been any for some time.

The Nav6 is based on a more modern Garmin unit - it has more onboard memory and a higher "horsepower' processor so it will, for example, re-route quicker. It also supports some more advanced bluetooth features like the ability to stream music from the phone to the headset (where the 5 can only stream from its on-board SD card)

don't get me wrong, the 5 is a good unit - i have one and i can't "quite" justify upgrading to a 6 - but if i was buying a new one today, it would be the 6 and not the 5

I use a Nav v1 on my 1250 and don't sync it to the TFT as I find the TFT doesn't add anything apart from complication.
With the nav you can bluetooth it to your phone \headset and play music\radio from phone\make\receive calls through Nav to your headset. It also links to Garmin Smartlink app on your phone to give up to date details of travel delays on route \weather etc.
Played with the TFT and the phone NAv app but it is very basic and only gives arrow directions for left\right etc.
Nav Vi does have problems if screen gets dirty or oils etc off gloves as it then thinks you are touching screen and starts jumping about display.

It probably comes down to what yo are used to. I hate TomTom it does my head in, my wife has it built into her car and it sometimes is very good - other times it’s close to useless.
Garmin is the make I have been buying since I have bought sat navs. They do what they are supposed to and work like a Mac in that if you don’t put the absolutely correct info in it won’t allow you search. TomTom in our experience leads you to believe it understands what yo want and takes you somewhere near your intended destination.

The Nav 6 may not have all the bells and whistles that the latest Zumo model may have but it does exactly what it should and it integrates very well with the controls on the bike so not drawing your hands and attention form where they need to be. I have one on my new GS. :thumb2

Nav 6 has better glare protection than the 5 / I run 1 on my 1250 and don't have any big issues with the TFT integration. The bmw Navs are expensive but it's great to have the ability to control it from the wheel. You also have the BMW app that you can run directions through the TFT via your phone. Only good when you have reception.
I don't have any regrets with the purchase.

My latest steed has the TFT but no Sat Nav and like the integration of my phone (android) with the TFT. I clip my phone to the bars using a Givi phone holder and gives mapping as the lock screen and directions via TFT and voice to my Helmet (Cardo QZ). I don't miss the vehicle info screen of my old Nav 5 at all as the TFT does this (speed, range and tyre pressures for me). I suppose it was useful to have real speed as a reference from the Sat Nav and not vehicle speed, but I know what the tolerances are in the speedo ish, so I don't worry about that. The connected App gives good and reliable service thus far and I am very pleased.

Thats interesting mate. Everything Ive read so far is saying the TTF/Phone nav is rubbish? Are you saying you get along fine with just using that with no Sat Nav unit?

Yep - It's fine for me. You can download the map you want. Select if you want fast or winding roads and took me to me destination just fine on the couple of occasions that I have used the sat nav to find a place. I use my phone with Google maps and this is not different imo. Good enough to sell my Nav5.

Cool might give it a go before splashing the cash! Did you remove the Sat Nav prep/cradle from your bike?

I have the TFT connected to a smsung s9 and a cardo freecom, and the s9 connected to the nav 6 too with no issues (although I have to resync them from time to time).
The only thing I have connected to the nav 6 is the phone, not the cardo ( I don´t like to have warnings blaring from the nav all the time, they cut off the pillion and the music and than they take a couple of seconds to fade away), that way I can find my destination on the garmin app on the phone and export it to the nav 6, way easier than doing that on the nav 6 screen and have traffic warnings on the nav
