Just had a high end Navigation system fitted in my car (courtesy of the boss) and was interested to see that it uses TeleAtlas software as opposed to the NavTech that I have on my Garmin 60c. I've been using various Garmins for a few years now and have rated them as good although not infallible.

This new high end all whistles and bells touch screen espresso making music generating dancing and talking toy isn't a patch on my little 60c. Navigating in a city recently it was convinced I was parked smack in the middle of a park and start navigating me along the foot paths in the park. Later on when it had realised it was a bit off I came to the street I wanted to turn into and the system was telling me to carry on in a big loop and drive about another kilometer to arrive about 150 meters from where I was at that moment. I tested it again today and it makes som very strange illogical routing calculations which the 60c just doesn't do.

Conclusion - this really is a case of not getting what you pay for . The 60c or most Garmins and other portable GPS's are very cheap compared to the high end in built system I have now got in the car. The system is only as good as the software and the maps database it runs so if you are looking for a Navigation system I'd suggest looking carefully at which software it is using because it seems to me at this stage that TeleAtlas is pants whilst NavTech would appear to be the dogs bollox.
