Nav V and straight lines..........??

Hello There,

Can anyone explain why every route I complie using Tyre, when imported and opened on my Nav is just a straight lines across fields, rivers, lakes etc and never the route points along roads as plotted on Tyre. Have checked all my settings and preferences on the Nav V and cannot understand why this is happening?

imho : I have given up on Basecamp (and had also earlier given up on Tyre) because neither is user friendly and is actually , very very frustrating as far as plotting a route/trip.

I have ended up using the Nav5 unit itself , a sharp ended stylus from a Galaxy Note and plotting routes/trips using the Trip Planner App in the Nav.

Much much easier and you can't go wrong because the plotting/mapping is done on the unit itself.

having said that, apparently you can now migrate a .kmx file from GoogleMaps into Basecamp and thereafter to the Nav5 :

In Tyre > Tools > Preferences > Google Maps - Map (tab) you did have 'Place waypoints exactly on roads' ticked didn't you?
Have to say, compared to Basecamp, Tyre is ridiculously easy to use.

Asked Tyre for help and got this reply. Not very helpful as both up to date.


Garmin have problems with his software, try to update the firmware and the software, hope it helps.

Hi I plan route and download to nav 5. The route displays on nav 5 but no voice commands, no junction info and often straight lines between points instead of following the road. What have I done wrong?

In Tyre > Tools > Preferences > Google Maps - Map (tab) you did have 'Place waypoints exactly on roads' ticked didn't you?
Have to say, compared to Basecamp, Tyre is ridiculously easy to use.

Just checked and correct box is ticked?

Have been using index finger as substitute for a stylus whilst browsing the units map. Find I have aged 18 months after each successful route plan. Looking at the Google maps/kms file/ Basecamp video demo' by time have plotted a route will be ready for a mug of Horlicks and mobility scooter.......

That's exactly what I do, minus the stylus, as I have fingers.

Garmin produce for BMW a satelite navigation system.

Garmin also produce and distribute for free a mapping software that is specifically designed for garmin products and to work hand in glove with these products

Peeps dont like it/cant get used to it/just cant be arsed to move forward.

Peeps use some third party software that isnt as device friendly as the specific Garmin product and then moan that it doesnt work very well ! (have i got the jist of this ?)

Basecamp does take some getting used to and could be more user friendly but it does work !!!

When you send a route to your satnav it only sends the start and finish points and any waypoints, your satnav fills in the rest
Me and my friends use tyre for routes and have now have a method that works on garmin and tom tom .
Set waypoints on the road that you wish to leave a town that you wish to pass through, stops that stupid weaving through a town when you could be on the ring road.
On a days ride in ,say, France we will have about 10 to 15 way points to force the route to stay put, otherwise different satnavs make up their own route.

No idea about Tyre, but the first time I loaded a newer version of the map on my Nav V the dreaded straight lines appeared on a route I subsequently downloaded from Basecamp. Redrew the route in Basecamp but the straight lines reappeared when it was loaded on the Nav V. Saw something, somewhere that suggested using the advanced options in Garmin Express to reload the map both on the Nav V and in Basecamp might resolve the problem, which it did.

When I looked briefly into the original problem I noted that the straight lines appeared over parts of the route where the road had been remapped for whatever reason (rerouting, change to speed limit). I now make sure that I load new maps both on the Nav V and in Basecamp and haven't had any further problems with straight lines.

Yep, my advice is to persevere with Basecamp, once you get used to it, (I do admit it does take some getting used to) It works really well and you can plan some great routes for your trips, your sat nav will guide you to roads/tracks you would struggle to find without local knowledge. I hated it when I first used it, but now I find it a good route planner and thank my lucky stars whenever I have a trip away on my bike.

This always happens when updating the map versions on the Nav IV. All you need to do is Edit the route go to Add or Remove Points, do nothing then save. The route will then recalculate with the current map version. Not sure if it is the same issue but this always happens and I found this is how to fix it !

On the Garmin 590 the straight line thing is due to you using the off road setting. There are 3 options car, motorcycle and off road (with a knobby tyre symbol). I believe that if you choose off road as oppose to car or motorcycle it will just plot a straight line from start to next waypoint(s).

As far as I know you need a map base to route against. this can be maps downloaded to basecamp or your garmin plugged in

I have a workaround that seems to work but doesn't give you the address data that would be nice to see. If you prepare a route in Tyre, which is easy, then open it in Basecamp you will see the route, however if you send to your Sat Nav it will show as a straight line??. To sort this you should view the tracks in Basecamp (see bottom of list) and convert them to a route from there. You lose lots of infomation within the route but it appears to follow it exactly. It saves as a route with a 'T' so you can differentiate. Least I think that's what I did.

The device should allow you to plan a route without it thinking it knows best and recalculating it.!! Also watch very carefully (zoom right in) to make sure you don't put a point on the wrong side of a carraigeway or you'll do a 10 mile loop for no reason!!

C'mon Garmin, why does basecamp not just send the exact route as planned and leave it at that!! Give us a non calculated option!! PLEASE

That seems like a complicated way to avoid using basecamp

If you have your device and computer set correctly basecamp produces great routes that are hassle free and work very well

Well said Redrick. Yes you are sounding like Wapping, but it needed saying. Nothing wrong with Basecamp, once you've learned how to use it.
