Well, I got a shiny new Nav V today (a replacement from BMW for the Nav IV with which I had ongoing problems) and I have fallen at the first hurdle!

I plugged the Nav V into my laptop (a Mac) and fired up GExpress so that I could check for device and map software updates. It scanned for connected devices and recognised that a Nav V was connected. It even gave the Serial Number of the Nav V.

BUT, I get the message "This device is not compatible with Express"

It then gives me two options:

"Ignore" - which just takes me back to GExpress but without the Nav V showing.
or
"Download Map Updater"

I already have Map Updater on my laptop, so I fired it up. It too recognises that the Nav V is connected and offered me the 2014.40 Map update. And so it is now downloading this update to the Nav V.

But everything Garmin is now done through GExpress. e.g. registration, map updates, device software updates etc. So how do I get GExpress to link with my Nav V? Any ideas?

That sounds strange. I've had no problems connecting my Nav V to Garmin Express.:nenau

Try removing GE & reinstalling it as you have done in the past, if that fails it looks like a call to Garmin. :blast

You can register the device on "My dashboard" on the Garmin site. Dont know if this will make any difference. :nenau

Device software can be updated via Garmin WebUpdater application.

I have tried re-downloading GE 3 or 4 times. It gives me v2.4.4 and that made no difference.

Cannot register the device via My Dashboard as that just directs you to use GE to register devices!!

Tried using Map Updater to get the 2014.40 maps last night. Left it running overnight (it was 2 hrs into the download when I went to bed) and woke this morning to find it 'stuck' about 1/3rd of the way through the download.

So, a phone call to Garmin Support looks inevitable!

Paul,

I've got exactly the same problem as you! Connected up the new unit today. It took me to Garmin Express which says unit is not compatible and I should use Garmin Map Updater. Map Updater finds the unit and proceeds to tell me it is updating. It's been wurring away for half of the day but there's absolutely no indication that anything's happening!:blast

Did you resolve yours?

I had a chat with the guys at Garmin Support. They said it would be a simple software update (famous last words?) and asked me to send them a copy of the GarminDevice.XML file from my Nav V.

I have done this and they have forwarded it to the "software team" in the USA. Witing to hear from them. I will keep you posted.

I mentioned to them that I had tried to update the maps using MapUdater and that, like your experience, it had frozen/hung up in the middle of the download. The techie's response was that he was not surprised and that MapUpdater is not as quick as GE and is susceptible to interruptions to the download causing it to fail. So I am waiting until they can get me the software update to allow me to use GE.

I will post up here again when I have their response

I've got exactly the same problem - so keen to hear what Garmin says. Considering it took years more than Garmin said it would to get any mapping software for the Mac (BaseCamp) I'm not super confident...

Okay - so I finally got Garmin Map Updater to download the map updates and they are sitting on my (Mac) desktop but I don't seem to be able to do anything with them. I went to the 'Advanced' choice before the download started and selected a download for both my PC and the Nav V. I have an added problem that has completely baffled me - whereas yesterday before I did the Map Updater download, my computer would recognise the Nav V (either through the desktop or in My Garmin), now it won't. :blast Despite the fact that the connected icon comes up on the screen of the Nav V, it only stays a short while and then the unit boots up as if you are about to use it. Didn't do this yesterday.

I eventually got through to Garmin Support, after about half an hour of anal music, and a very nice young lady went through a re-booting process. Her first attempt was to change the settings to force it to be recognised by my PC. How you ask? If you boot up your unit and press the volume button on the home screen you can access a secret menu by holding down your finger in the top right-hand corner of the screen. if you scroll down to MTP Settings, rather than using MTP Auto Detect, which is the default, select one of the others. In an attempt to get my unit to be recognised by my PC we tried both of the other options but without success. We then tried a Master Reset. To enable this you turn the unit off - properly, not on standby. By that I mean, hold the power button down until you get a screen asking you if you want to switch the unit off. Having done this, I held my finger in the right-hand bottom corner of the switched off unit and pressed the power button. Apparently, what should have happened here was that the unit would come up with another hidden menu asking if I wanted to do a master reset. In my case - nothing.

At this point my charming young lady decided that I needed to return the unit. Having concluded that this might just be progress of some sort she then informed me that because the unit was a BMW model I would have to return it to the BMW dealer I bought it from! The challenge here is that I bought it from a BMW dealer in northern Italy - and I don't really want to be sending the unit half way across Europe unless I am convinced that it is the unit that is at fault.:(

For this reason, I am even more interested in seeing what other solutions Garmin comes up with for you guys! Could they have made a faulty batch? I guess so, but they are never going to admit it! I might try popping into my local BMW dealer and see if I can get any joy from them.

Keep the info coming guys!

It might be that you are doing the "master reset" incorrectly.

On another thread Dan Townsley of 'All things gps' posted these instructions for a master reset:

"............The other thing you might do is a Master Reset but connect your NAV5 to your computer/BaseCamp and backup your saved places, Trips and Tracks.

Master Reset:
Power up NAV5, when you see the BMW Motorrad Logo, press and hold the lower righthand corner of the display until you see the Question. Answer YES. You will then need to re-do our personal settings on the NAV5 including pairing your headset.

The Master Reset will not effect your Music or other personal files/data."

i.e. you have to power up the device before you start pressing the lower righthand corner. But it could be something of nothing!

Well I've had some success today and seem to have ironed out the gremlins that were causing the issues.:thumb2 I've now been able to register and update to the latest maps with ease, via Garmin Express.

So, what were the issues?
  • I had a conflict between my Mac and the Windows 8 that is also running on my Mac.
  • To solve this I had to remove all Garmin software from the Mac so that the Nav V could be seen by Windows 8 (this is where I have chosen to put all my Garmin stuff because I find Basecamp in Windows MUCH easier than the Mac version).
  • Following this, Garmin Express fired up, asked me to register the device, and everything has gone very smoothly downloading a map upgrade from 2014.3 to 2014.4. This took about 3 hours.
The only thing that hasn't gone according to plan is that I tried to update both to the device and my computer but it looks as if it has only done the device. I suspect I missed an 'Advanced' tab somewhere that would have allowed me to select both device and PC. I think the default is just the device.:blast

In all fairness to Garmin, it looks as if the whole episode was due to 'User Error' :augie

You can click on “Show Details” in Express to get to “Advanced settings"

I think I must have missed that in my excitment that I appeared to be making good progress!!

A progress report:

My computer/Garmin Express automatically downloaded a new software update this morning: v 3.0.2 (0)

And I am happy to report that this latest version of GE recognised my Nav V (which earlier versions had reported was "incompatible")

So give it a go and see if you have the same luck to?
