Hi folks just got my first bmw and it had navigator v my question s are on the back there is a panel held on by 2 screws whats it for and also when I click it into the cradle on bike is it then locked on with the key ie theft proof any advice much appreciated

Once the Nav5 is clicked in to the unit and you turn the key then yes, it is locked on. The panel on the back houses the battery and the memory card. Once attached to the cradle it will take power from there. If you don’t use it for a while, you may want to plug the usb cable in just to give it a bit if a charge.

One hint: when you turn off the bike, you will get the message something like "Do you want to turn the unit off now?" It will then count down 30 seconds before turning off. Do NOT turn it off by pressing the off button on the screen.

When I do this it turns my unit completely off - need to remove it from cradle and hold the power button in for 20 seconds or something to make it burst back into life.

If you just let it close down on its own, it will restart as soon as you turn the bike back on, or with a quick press of power button if you remove it from cradle.

(This may be a fault with my unit, as I'm sure it's not supposed to happen like that, but worth being aware in case yours does the same!)

Incidentally, while the cradle does lock the unit in place, it doesn't seem particularly secure to me. If I'm leaving the bike somewhere in public, I take the unit out and put the blanking plate in.

I think it is your unit. I always hit the off choice and the nav always fires up next time

What? I always turn it off or it runs the battery down? Comes back on fine next time?... must be your unit...

I thought it might be peculiar to my unit, but it never happened with the same unit on previous bike (K1600). I already have the latest software on the unit so I'll wait until next software update is available and see if that resolves it.

It's not an issue for depleting the battery - an extra 30s isn't going to make any difference to the sat nav battery, and the message only appears because the bike has turned power off.

yes, mine does thst, counts down for x number of seconds. if I let it turn itself off, next time I use it, it has to charge the battery in the unit before it works, so even saying its turned off, its still using battery to do something?
If I say 'yes' to turn off in the countdown, it comes on straight away next time so must not use the battery.

It should not matter which way the unit turns off, mine is quite happy either way.

When it’s in the cradle and you shut the bike off the nav goes into standby (whether by letting the counter go down or hitting the off button).

It’s not the same as when it’s out of the cradle and you turn it off. Then it does a full off and will do a full reload at next power on.

Since the battery in my Nav is kinda knackered at this stage if the bike has been sitting for a week it will take a minute or two before the nav boots up.

Bit like when your phone goes completely flat - it demands a bit of charge before starting up.

Sounds like the battery in the nav unit won’t hold a charge properly

The battery in mine would not last long if it had no power while turned on. So I replaced the battery and its still no better. At best it will last approx a hour. Me thinks its just what they are like. Even had it back under warranty and they replaced the battery. If its powdered down for more than say 2 weeks its flat when turned on. Shite really when you think how much we pay for them

When my battery was new I would get maybe two hours. But yes they are the battery power. The devices were designed to be powered from the bike nearly continuously and just had the battery to allow standby and a small bit of faffing
