Nav vi

I like my Nav VI

But... it has a really nasty characteristic.

You can only turn it off 'OFF' by the button on the back of the unit.

If it's secured in the cradle, you can't reach that button, so the easiest option is to turn it off by the screen prompt... however, this does not turn it off 'OFF' and whatever the fook it does it'll run its internal battery down to flat.

So when you come back to use the bike a week later, all day long you'll play russian roulette to whether it'll turn on at all. Even in the cradle.

It's a pain in the ass.

The ONLY solution I've found is to make sure the unit is FULLY CHARGED via wall charger before you use it... or use it every day.

My mate and his NAV V doesn't do that, his is ok.

Just saying....

Apparently if you remove it fromthe cradle and turn it off it does not drain the battery, if it turns off in the cradle, when the ignition of the bike is switched off, it's not off but on.....pay attention at the back! However, my VI is nearly always flat when off the bike for a few weeks......so how do you switch if off, proper like?

I always remove it from the cradle now, and ignore the onscreen messages, unless you hold down the button on the back of the unit, and THEN TURN IT OFF. That's off 'OFF'

If I've not used the Nav VI in a few days (weekend to weekend) I try and remember to charge it the night before I ride. Then turn it on, and fit it to the cradle as I'm about to depart.

That way, it always has enough power internally to work properly, and then it seems to charge ok from the cradle during the ride.

That way I never have a problem with it. :thumb

Before I realised it's just a very stupid design, I bought a brand new Garmin battery thinking it was a duff battery that kept failing...

But when that started doing the very same thing.... and just before I started winding myself up on a warranty claim mission, thinking the unit itself was faulty, I discovered this OFF/ON - OFF/OFF bollocks.

Once I understood this, no problems since.

:rolleyes::blast

Be careful about what you wish for, with an accessible SatNav power button. Geezer I know parked his Multistrada 1260S up at a well-known Surrey biker spot recently and went to the cafe to do an observed ride debriefing, leaving his TomTom locked in the cradle. On return to his bike, he found the TomTom powered up and running a route to his home address. He hadn't done that (he knows how to get home from where he was) and realised someone had been playing with the TomTom. Had he not got his 'home' location set about a mile from where he actually lives, some lowlife at Rykas would have found out where his expensive, desirable bike is kept.

In fact i am so certain that i will never buy a satnav again, i use a galaxy s9 which has a fantastic screen even in bright sunlight and am iphone 6 with a pay as u go sim on vodaphone which is superb for abroad in my jacket pocket just in case i am ever parted from the bike.

My Nav VI started to act up a couple of weeks ago.

I then hooked it up to my PC and updated firmware through Garmin Express. That made the trick, and the NAV is now back to normal operation..

Yeah, I've got several Garmin Devices and they're all up to date.... the Garmin Express highlights those devices needing an update, so they all get done when needed....

- Garmin Virb XE Cameras x 4
- Garmin Virb 360 Camera
- Garmin BMW NAV VI
- Garmin Zumo 660
- Garmin GPSMAP 276cx
- Garmin Inreach Explorer Plus
- Garmin GPSMAP 60csx

I do like my Garmin kit.

This week-end my Nav V has:-

1. Stopped turning off when the ignition is switched off - no "Power lost" prompt, etc. It is charging in the cradle.
2. Stopped reacting to the wonder wheel.

Is it coincidence that I updated the software and maps via Garmin Express during the week?

**UPDATE**

I just cleaned the contacts on the back of the Nav V with a pencil erase and did the same with the cradle pins. It's now working as it should !
