Long have I used good old paper maps but now that I’ve got the R1200GS I’d like to purchase a GPS navigation system. However, I’m quite new to this and would welcome some advice. I use the bike as transport for a site I’m working on called Ancient Stones, a data base of megalithic stones in southern Scotland. What I want is to buy or assemble a system that will use Ordnance Survey 1:50k (or better 1:25k) maps as the base map – most devices seem to use the typical touring route maps you get. Anyone have any idea how I can achieve this?

Hi Gary

If you pop in & see us at Dalkeith, we have BMW, Garmin & TomTom GPS demo units to play with, which may help you decide........?

Cheers

If you must have OS maps then a Pda with Memory Map is just about the best option as Garmin Topo UK is not as good. The previous series of MM is being sold off at the moment at a very good price (whole of the uk for around £100) and being last years maps does not make much difference in lanes and fields and minor roads as they are not routable.

May pop in tomorrow although I think I'm really going down the Pocket PC with Memory Map route.

I've found just about everything I need to know from the Memory Map support forum. It's a good resource if anyone else is interested.
