If it helps, this is a 2019 model. (according to the copyright notice on startup). I think it does auto update, but I cannot confirm this. That said, I've never used a postcode in it and never had failure to find it.

well, you learn something every day eh? All I can say is that I put it in its mount, search, then go. Never had a problem with it.

Dunno Richard .... never updated my maps. The roads I want to use have been around four hundred years

Garmin Express on your computer or laptop connected to your unit (Nav 5/6, XT) and you can register it, update maps etc, etc.
Garmin Express will also inform you by email when further updates are available.
