Does anyone know how long a route can be recorded using the tracking function?

I use a 1Gb compact flash card, of which 500Mb is taken up with maps, which should leave 500Mb for tracking, routes, etc.

However, I tracked a journey of just 13 miles last weekend and the GPS said that I'd used 4% of the tracking memory - which suggests that the GPS will only record a track of 13/0.04 = 325 miles, which doesn't seem very much.

Regards, Will

IIRC, tracking is done on the unit's internal memory, so the size of the data card you have inserted is irrelevant. Bit of a stupid design, but I'm sure that Garmin had a "very good reason" for doing it, which is probably incomprehensible in our simple earth language.

It depends on how many bends and hills are on the route you are tracking. If you download the track into Mapsource and select "Properties" for it you will see it records, bearing, position, altitude, speed etc for each "bit" that remains constant.
